Can't access router settings
I hope this is in the right section...
I'm running a network consisting of three computers: an old p1, a g4 mac and a p4 running xp (my main computer). I'm running the network on a Linksys 4 port router (BEFSR41).
The problem is, the computer running xp is unable to access the router. When i try to connect to 192.168.1.1 (the router) in internet explorer, it just comes up with an error after a long wait. The mac, however, is able to access the router without any problems.
I can access the internet and share files without any difficulties on all computers, but the inability to access my router from my main computer is a pain...
any ideas?

I use the same router and don't have any problems connecting to http://192.168.1.1
What error message are you getting?

Open Command Prompt then type ...
ping 192.168.1.1
then try
tracert 192.168.1.1
The first test (ping) will tell you if your router can be seen by your system.
The second test (tracert) will show the route to your router.
If the router cannot be seen by either of these tests try rebooting the router, make sure you leave it switched off for at least 30 seconds before switching back on.

What is the ...
IP of your XP machine?
Subnet Mask for your XP Machine?
If you disconnect the other machines can you get into the router?

With all machines connected.
Use one of the other machines to access the Router settings.
In Router settings goto DHCP > DHCP Client Table.
Post back ...
The DHCP Server IP Address.
All the Client IP Addresses.

just an idea
Go back into DHCP and check the number of DHCP Users is more than 2.
Or try Advanced and check that the IP Address of the XP Box isn't 'Filtered'.

Weird!
The IP Address of the router is not banned by any software Firewall in the XP box is it?
If possible try swapping the ethernet cable with one of the other machines to ensure that it isn't a cable problem.
The only other thing I can think of is the LAN Port on the Router itself.

There is no software firewall on my xp machine. The pentium 1 is also unable to access the router settings. I can't switch the cables around because the computers are in different rooms on different floors, but the one wire i bought pre-capped is connected to my xp machine, so that's likely not the cause.

Hi guys, I'm having the same problem. But my case is a little different.
At first I only had a laptop(192.168.1.3) connected to the router. Acessing the settings at 192.168.1.1 was not a problem, then I added another computer(192.168.1.2) to the network wirelessly, I was also able to access the router settings through that PC over the wireless network. Then I added a third computer(192.168.1.4) wirelessly (btw, all are using the same subnet mask 255.255.255.0) to the network, but was not able to access the settings, I then tried to connect to the router settings using the 192.168.1.2 pc and all was fine. BUT, the next time I tried accessing the settings the connection timed out. I tried accessing the settings on all 3 pcs, but the connection keeps timing out. I can ping the router, and can access the internet and LAN through the router, but just cant access the settings!
Any ideas on why this has happened?
