Windows XP Network Slow data access

In the last few months we have installed Windows XP Pro sp1 (clean installs on all computers) on our 8 computers that are setup on a peer/peer network. Computers were running 98 or ME before the XP launch and the speed of sharing date was great. Once we installed XP, accessing data on a shared drive takes 10 times as long! I know there has got to be some modifications that can be made in order to enhance the speed on the network! Any suggestions? Thanks.

Are the Link Speed & duplex setting for the network cards set up correctly?
They would normally be set on Auto detect now but some NIC's require you to tell them whether it's 10mb/ 100mb, full or half duplex.

If this is set up wrong it can cause slow data transfer rates

I have changed the settings from auto detect to full duplex/100, but there was not performance increase.

Just to confirm, the network cards are 100mb not 10

If they are them i'm sorry to say i'm stumped i'm not sure of any other settings that will cause the network to run slow.
