Windows File Protection Error

Hello,

I installed Windows XP yesterday on my home computer and
have continuously recieved similar errors over and over
again. I recieve the following error:

Windows File Protection
Files that are required for Windows to run properly have
been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain
system stability, Windows must restore the original
versions of these files. Insert your Windows XP Home
Edition CD-ROM now.

I tried using the anti-virus software here to check for viruses and worms:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Is there any other freeware I could use to check? I don't have enough money to purchase a virus checker now, sorry.

Thank you,
David Wilder

Stinger only looks for the specific virus' listed on the site. Here are a couple of other free on-line virus scanners.

AVG has a free version of its anti-virus program. I suggest that you install it from here.

Do you have you're installation disk for XP Home? This might not be virus related and a repair installation may be necessary.

Actually I do still have the CD. I tried installing AVG and for some reason I can't install it... my system tries to then install my iPod for Windows software again. But about THIS issue... I emailed Microsoft's customer support and asked about it, and they told me to follow these steps:

1. Put the Windows XP CD to the CD-ROM.
2. Click Exit if the auto-menu pops up.
3. Click Start, and click Run.
4. Type "SFC /Scannow" (without quotation marks) in the Open box, and click OK.
5. Restart the computer and check if this issue can be resolved.

It seems to have cleared up for the most part. If anyone else is having this problem, perhaps they should try this.
