Network and Internet Conflict??

Hi. I am a new user and I have a problem with using the Internet and connecting to my LAN.

I recently installed XP on my old 98SE machine. However, I seem to have a problem connecting to my LAN, or more specifically one computer on the network.

When I first boot the system I can access the network and all the computers on it, however, after establishing an internet connection, one of the computers becomes unavailable and I get the message that the computer is 'unaccessible' and I 'might not have permission to use the network resource'. Other computers remain accessible, however. This happens whenever I try to access that computer even if I disconnect from the internet until I next reboot the system.

I think the problem may be being caused by the two computers having the same IP address, as this is a message that came up when I tried to setup connection sharing for my broadband connection from my XP machine.

Any help with this would be very much appreciated. I have tried to give as much info as possible but I am not very knowledgable in networking (but trying to learn!).

Thanks.

As I understood, you have three computers and when you access the Internet one of the computer become in accessible but one other is fine. Also you mentioned you have IP conflict.

How is your network setup? meaning which machine is your gateway to Internet ?
Are you using a built in ICS or third party software?
or
Are you using a router ?
have you assigned IP manually ?
Is the inaccessible machine the gateway by any chance?

cheers

Thanks for replying snowmonkey,

Actually there are 5 machines on the network but I only have trouble connecting to one. The one I have trouble connecting to is not strictly speaking a PC... It is a Compaq NeoServer and is basically used to store general files on here at my workplace. It does have Internet Connection Sharing built in I believe but it is no longer used, although it is probably enabled and cannot be turned off.

At the moment I am not using ICS although I did try to set it up through my XP machine as the host but due to the IP conflict, could not.

I am not using a router or any other such device...
