Re-formatting my computer

Hello,

Recently, I posted about my system taking almost 4 minutes to boot up to a usable state. I was told, that although I removed some software programs, I still have a bunch of things running in the background slowing me down.

I have 2 hard-drives, both 80gig each. My secondary hard drive has about 10 gig used and my main hard drive now only has about 40 gig used. It was recently full until I removed some programs no longer needed.

I never reformatted a system before, so can anyone tell me the steps to do so, and, if I back up my main hard drive to my secondary hard drive, what should I do to reformat my main? I want to go back to my 1 minute boot up if I can. Once I do re-install XP Pro, what do I do with the back up that I put on my secondary drive, I mean, how does that data, get back to my main drive?

I apologize for the confusion, but I would like to get it right without losing what I have.

Thank you

Morriah

Click Here to open a thorough guide to doing a clean install of XP. Skip the first part and scroll about a third of the way down the page to the heading, "Steps to Clean Install XP."

Just copy all your data files (documents, address book, email messages you may want to keep, music, pictures, browser Favorites, etc.) to the second harddrive. If you use bookkeeping software, like Quicken, don't forget to back up its data onto the second drive, too.

I recommend you copy rather than move the files. That way, if Windows hiccups during the transfer, you'll still have the originals to try again. If there's a problem during a move, you run the risk of losing the files you're trying to move.

I make a folder on the drive I'm backing up to and copy all the data into that folder so they will be easily found and retrieved later.

You cannot save programs, they will have to be reinstalled.

Once Windows is reinstalled and all updates installed, you can copy the data files back to where they were. In the case of Outlook Express or Outlook, it's better to import the old files back into the program.

Hello,

Thank you so very much for your quick reply and awesome guide.

Question; I just want to be able to understand all this. I backup my files to a seperate folder on my secondary harddrive, then, after I reformat, and install the software that I want, how does the backup information such as emails, files, find their home to where they were before i backed them up? Or, do I have to bring each folder one my one to the place it has to go?

Question; Also, I play a game called Worlds of Warcraft. Once I back this folder up, and reinstall the game, can I copy this folder back to the WoW folder and will it have all the patch updates as it did before I did the format?

Question; What about my drivers and such for my sound and video cards, will that information still be there? Or will it need to be downloaded from the various websites?

Again, I apologize for the questions, I so do not want to mess this up.

Thank you

Software reinstall required

You can back up a data folder and reuse it after re installing XP. But softwares need to be reinstalled in most cases as there will be associated registry entries. If you do not have a copy of the driver*.inf, *.sys files for the specific drivers then drivers should also need to be reinstalled from the specific websites.
If you use Norton Ghost from Symentec to back up your hard drive then you ultimately make a exact copy of your original drive/ partition. Still that can be of use only for recovering your main hard drive. If you want to reinstall the OS, then the correct thing is to back up all the data folders, driver folders(if you have them seprately) and after installing OS, you got to reinstall all your applications as new.

Hello,

I just purchased Norton Ghost as someone recommended it to me. I have yet to use it though as I have been waiting for this help from you all who have been generous enough to help me.

I guess what I am still puzzled about is, after the information is backed up, how does it get back to where it was, just copy and paste?

Thank you

Copy & paste

You shall boot from your main hard drive while leaving the auxiliary hard drive ( with back up data) in the secondary IDE. Now you can view both the hard dirves in your 'My computer'. Go ahead and copy paste all your required data from the back up drive to the main drive.

Thank you. I just wanted to be sure not to leave anything unanswered. This is one "hell" of a forum.
