make sure your bios is set to boot the cdrom first, drop in the xp cd and restart, do not try to install from windows 98. if this is a legal copy, it should start the install , may have to "press any key to boot from cd" once the setup is loaded, and you have agreed to MS's terms of use you will come to a screen that shows your partitions, you can delete them all, then create them whatever size you want them to be. once they are all created, select the one you want to install xp on, follow the directions, install xp, now that xp is installed, go to the control panel, click switch to classic view on the upper left, then go to the administrative tools, then to computer management, then select storage, then disk management. you can format the other partitions there.

i only posted the "legal copy" because alot of people download a copy from the net, burn it to cd and it does not boot from startup, work fine from windows as far as upgrade/new installation. but to be booted from cd, either have to make it bootable, or use the 6 floppy disk set to start it. not that i really care where it comes from just like to know which i am dealing with so as better to deal with the question, and i try real hard not to sound like a fool, and keep my answers brief.
