Unhappy Windows XP Home cannot boot

To my knowledge nothing was installed on the computer that could have triggered this problem.

Basically after the windows XP home loading screen (the one with the green progress bar) the screen goes black...and it just hangs there unless i reboot....

I cant get into safe mode or last best settings. I tried booting from the XP home cd and using the repair options however it appears (in my opinion) that there is no write or modification access to the hard drive??? is this possible?

The first message I get when i run the repair program is

Setup cannot delete the file: intro.avi

...so i hit esc to skip the file then it does the same thing for several other files. Then once those files are skipped i get a "Setup cannot create the folder:

\WINDOWS\system32\mui

Setup cannot continue until the folder is created.

To retry press enter

To quit press F3

...retry doesnt work and all i can do it quit.

Anyone had this problem? I cant format cos i cant get a dos prompt. The only other solution I can think of would be to use partition magic boot disk and partition the drive creating a new installation of windows hopefully being able to keep data from the other installation?

Hope someone can help.....thanks.

when you boot from the home cd , do you get to the partition display page, if so delete the partition, then create the partition again, select it as the designation to install xp, and it should start the format, if the format does not go through, first i would check the ide/ribbon cable, next try a different drive, if the computer is under a manufacturer's warrenty, just call them up before you do anything. if the format does go through you should be able to reinstall xp just fine, good luck.

I think you are at the point, correct me if i'm wrong, where you just want to erase the hard drive, reload and move on? If this is so, figure out who manufactured your hard drive(wd, Maxtor, etc.,) . Go to the mfg. site and download their setup progran for the drive. It will be a bootable program and in 5 min your drive will be formatted and setup for your operating system. Then you will be able to install your operating system . Good luck

A thank you to gfisheye and the ST&T forum site

HI, I have been working on a problem of my not being able to boot into windows after an unsuccessful attempt a complete install. The result was that I get a blue screen with a prompt of Stop :c0000221 Bad Image checksum. To make a long story short I have been looking for a resolution to this problem and came across this very nice and informative forum site named ST&T. Within this forum site I came across a very logical response to one of the forums goers questions on how to boot into windows . gfisheye recommended that the forums goer go to the harddrive manufacturer and to download some proceedures that rid the harddrive of the error all together. I have yet to try it but I feel sure that this is the right track that needs to be taken for my problem. There are times when faced with a problem that I have the tendency to complicate the subject and go off on needless travels to needless destinations when experience has always told me that most all the time it is the simple logic that gets the job done, expecially when it comes to computers. I want to thank gfisheye for his logical advise that I will use to correct my current problem. Thanks gfisheye for your helping me with my problem I really do appreciate you answering forum goers queries which enabled me to realize the solution to my problem. And thanks to the Forum ST&T for making available the wonderful forum site that I am now a member of. Again thanks to all.
