Disappearing Icons In Taskbar Notification Area

Using XP Home on an HP 1.3mhz machine. Noticed lately that the icons in the taskbar notification area seem to come & go at ramdom everytime I boot up. I have "customized" the taskbar with 10 items to "always show" & locked the taskbar, but they seem to have a mind of their own. Scanned for viruses, none found. Updates current except SP1 was removed because it was slowing down my machine. Seen a few references to this same problem posted, but there doesn't seem to be any one solution to the problem.

i have not been answering because i am not real sure what people mean, is this the start menu, that is what the 10 items is selected for, or by the clock, are the icons hidden by the task bar with a arrow in a small circle? or is this the quick launch?
