i have a maxtor HD and first time i got a problem w/ it

i got window xp pro
my first hd was a maxtor 40gig
then i switch my 40 gig w/ a 140 gig
now my bios doesnt even detect my hard drive( the 40 gig)
both are maxtor

Your post isn't making much sense. If you "switched" the 40 gig drive for the new one, then obviously your sytem will no longer detect the original 40-gig one. i guess this was just a typing error?

If your system won't detect the the new drive, it may simply be because you haven't set it's 'jumper' in the correct position. The jumper is a bridging connector on the back panel of the drive. there are usually three differet positions it can be in;
1. Master (M)
2. Slave (S)
3. cable select (CS)

There will be a small diagram on one side of the drive (near the rear panel) showing which position the bridge pin needs to be for each of the three configurations.

if the new drive is the only drive, the jumper needs to be in the 'Master' postion, and the drive itself should be connected to the end-connector on the ribbon cable, not the middle connector.
