Network and Internet Sharing Problem with XP Home Edition...
Can anyone help me with what should be a relitively simple thing of being able to network 2 pcs together running XP home ed. I have done it before, with ease. But for whatever reason since I reinstalled windows on my machine it refuses to share the internet connection, or find the other computer on the network, or even find itself on the network. I have run the connection set up wizard more times than I can recall. But when I goto "View workgroup computers" I get this error
Normally it would at least show its self as a work group machine, the other computer manages to do with. My computer however does not.
Anyone got any ideas? I am baffled. Previously it was a simple case of plugging in the network cable and the computers were networked, and working and setting up the internet connection sharing and it worked. This time, I am stuck. Has the reinstall fux0red up, or anything?
Thanks in advance,
Simon

make sure the windows xp firewall is off on both machines, start/run/ type msconfig, go to the services tab, scroll down remove the chech from internet connection firewall, apply and reboot, after the reboot put a check in the dont show this box again and click ok to the system config has been used screen, if still you have problems, right click my computer, select properties, the the hardware tab, device manager, then make sure no yellow ! or ? next to anything, mostly networking, but if you have anything highlighted it means the driver is not installed for whatever device it is by. if all is good there, go to the computer name tab, then make sure both computers have a idividual name, then click the change button , make sure both belong to the same workgroup default XP is MSHOME. if still nothing, go to my network places, show network connections, right click and repair, most of what i described requires a reboot after each is applied. after reboot and one does not work move on to the next "fix".

I have tried all of the above steps and no luck. Tried to asign my i.p. numbers for the network (192.168.0.1 & 192.168.0.2) and I also tried to have it asign its own. Tried to repair the connection and recieved this error on both computers;
I still get the error in my fist post. The computers for whatever reason can't see each on the network although when the cable is plugged in it knows its plugged in on both machines.
I am thinking that the Windows installation on my machine could be botched or something and a fresh clean installation could help?

Are you using ...
Crossover Cable?
Network Hub?
Router?
On the Host Machine what are your settings for ...
Client?
Services?
Protocols?
What is your Workgroup name?

Not sure what exactely everything you are asking is, so I will best answer as I can:
Crossover cable.
Client: Client for Microsoft Networks; Windows Locator
Services: Not sure what you mean so I just screen grabbed the internet connection and network connection:
Internet Connection:
Network Connection:
Protocols: Internet TCP/IP (on the internet connection it gets the i.p. automatically, for the network connection it has the i.p.s above with 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask)
Work groupname: HOME (on both computers, without MS as I thought maybes changing the workgroup may help)

Try adding the following protocols ...
NWLink NetBIOS
NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol

Ok, nevermind that one. I got the 2 computers networking. Now the only problem is the internet sharing. As the computer using my computers connection, isnt letting me change the i.p. and the subnetmask for some reason as the option for it has seemingly vanished.
The options under the general tap have vanished to change the i.p. and subnet gateway.

This works for me, r-click my network places on desktop - select properties - select set up home or small office network - step through the setup screens and opt to make a floppy to set up your other machines then just run the floppy on all the machines you want in your LAN.
I have 4 machines networked 2 running xp pro 1 win 98 and one win 2k pro using the disk to set it all up was a breeze.
Just make sure the computer name is unique to the computer and that the computer discription and workgroup are the same on all the computers and turn off the firewall on xp
If you are using Norton Internet security you need to configure it so that the ip addresses of the computers on your LAN are in the trusted zone.
Hope this helps ... elux

Well I tried everything I could think of. Nothing worked. So I clean installed XP, set the internet connection to share. Set it up on the client machine to share it. Hey presto, worked. I think the installation of XP was fux0red. But thanks for all the help, I learned some new things out of it. Mostly that I want a G5!
