want to install windows xp

I have windows 98 installed on my computer ( a gateway).
I have recently downloaded windows xp professional corporate.exe
I want to install the windows xp and then remove the windows 98.
When I click on the .exe for windows xp pro corporate, I get the message: "windows xp pro corparate.exe is not a valid win32 application"
I would like to get rid of windows 98 and install windows xp.
I looked on the microsoft webpage and they said that it was possible to have two operating systems on the computer at one time. That is why I was going to install the windows xp and then delete my windows 98.
Can anyone tell me how I can accomplish this task?
I am not great with computers. That is why I am reluctant to delete windows 98 first. (If there is no windows 98, can I still access the windows xp pro corp.exe?)
I would appreciate anyones help.

There is no such version of Windows XP, and it does not come as a single executable. You might have a virus infected file there dude!

Buy a legal copy of Windows XP Professional and upgrade!

xp install

It does sound as if you have obtained a fake or dud version of xp pro,as for running two or more operating systems on the same computer it is ok to do this but you need a program to PARTITION your hard drive. That is to divide the hard drive into seperate sections which are called partitions.A very good and reliable program to do this easily is Partition Magic, the versions available relate to the size of the hard drive you wish to partition and if after partitioning and installing xp alongside win 98 you decide to remove one Partition Magic will allow you to do so.If you need any further info e-mail me,regards pc fanatic.

xp install

Actually xp will give you the option to partition your hard drive when you install it so if you do obtain a genuine copy of xp you should be ok although you will not want to keep 98 once you experience xp.

Might be that the file you recieved was compressed under another OS (maybe Win2000). Before tossing the file, try opening it with a good compression utility (such as WinRAR). If you can view the file's contents you may be able to extract to a temp directory and install from there (virus&trojan scan it prior). If you use the upgrade option it'll carry over your old installations, and archive your old OS in case you want to go back to it. However, it's likely that you've got a bad copy and need to find a better one (if you want less hassles - buy it). As Pcfanatic2 stated, WinXp will offer to partition your drive for you upon install. If you have a large drive (over 147GB then use Partitian Magic - XP has issues with large drives and isn't that good for utilizing the full capacity even on smaller drives)). Also as pcfanatic2 mentioned, you really won't want (or need) Win98 after installing XP. XP, by default has more bells and whistles, but it also has the option to mimic the plain-Jane Win98 desktop. XP is compatible with all your 98 software (and 95 and most Win3.x). It's also very stable, fast and easy to work with. The major considerations when moving to XP though is whether you have the drive space (2-3GB) to permanently loose to the OS and have a decent amount of RAM (256M or more).

"If there is no windows 98, can I still access the windows xp pro corp.exe?" Yes, before starting, created a 3.5" floppy boot disk. Format it with the /s option to copy over your system files and copy some useful files from your /dos directory : edit.*, doskey.*, scandisk.*, fdisk.*... and autoexec.bat and config.sys from c:\. So you should be able to pop in the disc at boot, CD over to the exec and run it. Of course, if you've got the retail (store bought) package this is unneccessary.

hi

i also had a copy of xp corp retail in EXE, opened with with winace and burned the contents (properly, et al)

after some uh..tricky stuffs...mainly i wanted to put my entire hdd and all 3 partitions of it into ntfs, but i couldn't put the primary partition (the one i would install to) into ntfs (from fat32) because it contained some files needed for installation...i figured well ill del the extra 2 partitions and create another 8gig partition and install on it..then del or w/e the fat32 partition and put it in ntfs, then install xp on that partition or just del it altoegher...lengthy but i ddidn't wanna waste too much time, well anyways, i got xp installed and uh, well everythin was goin good (i hated havin to install from winme, i wanted a normal install from dos but didn't appear i had much of a choice until i had xp installed...i ultimately ended up in a dual boot environment)...well when i start it up it says Windows Product Activation error, problem preventing windows from accurately checking auth etc...well then i click ok and go to log on...wow it says it again and then sticks at the logon screen...so i can't get past that so good game i suppose...

anyways, i heard that drive letter changes can cause this...mm ye maybe on legal copies but...i dunno, how can i change anything in the ntfs registry when i can't get past the log on screen lmfao...

i dl'd this 500mb file and was a big deal (since the comp i put it on couldn't seem to get past 28k, took a week to get it...after much deliberation on which 'file' to get..) anyways ye i have my reasons for that so uh broadband idiots kk stf they don't have that where i am...anyways, uh..ye gfg microsoft i mean, i don't have the money to buy xp pro until another month and i just built this comp a couple weeks ago, I WANT XP NOW lmao... can't even use Hyper threadin under ME and i get like soo many probs in me...that i heard don't exist in xp... sad sad day for me~
