Incomprehensible high CPU usage

Very very strange problem :

Some time (between 5 and 20 minutes) after I boot my computer, the CPU becomes crazy and is just running at 100%. This lasts only 1 or 2 minutes and then it's ok. But during these 2 minutes, I can't do anything else. Under the task manager, I can't see a particular process using the CPU (!?!?) : the taskmanager itself seems to use a huge CPU-time. I really can't understand.

My config : laptop 2.2 GHz, 512 MB, XP pro SP1, Office XP,...

Thanks for your help.

What are the actual CPU Usage % figures and the tasks that are using the CPU?

e.g.

Task Manager 3%

System Idle 92%

There's a bug in XP that can cause your CPU to go to 100% and other operations (such as copying files, network connections or streaming audio/video) to suffer degraded performance when you right click a file or folder. Want to know why it happens and how you can work around it? See KB article 819101 at
http://www.winxpnews.com/rd/rd.cfm?i...CO-Right_Click
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=819101

"Preview" of the .AVI files may be the cause of explorer.exe high cpu use .
Start -> Run -> type in: Regedit & press Enter .

Find the >

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shel lex\PropertyHandler\

directory and delete the "DEFAULT" key

SYMPTOMS
The processor performance state may not be restored to the maximum state if the CPU runs at 100 percent. This problem occurs if the computer is 100 percent busy when the power policy changes.

==================================

Try performing an advanced clean-boot of XP to isolate the problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=316434

================================

There are four services associated with lsass.exe and most users (especially home
users) do not need any of them running.

They are:
IPSEC services
Net Logon
NT LM Security Support Provider
Protected Storage

Type "services.msc" in run, and disable them.

I suggest you visit the following URL for complete info:

=================================

If high while surfing , try repairing IE .
Repair IE6

Or ,
1) Click on Start > Run
2) Copy & paste the following line into Run >
rundll32.exe setupapi.InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf
4) Press Enter .
5) Have your XP cd ready .

jmatt : thank you for these typical solutions, but they don't seem to solve my problem.

LooseChippings : in fact, it's very difficult to tell the actual CPU usage because they change very quickly (during my problem) :

Taskmgr.exe is at 60% and 2 seconds later it's near 20% !?!?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...it's very boring, because i do some music with my computer, and if the problem occured in a live gig while i'm playing...it would be awful...

Here are 2 pics that may help you help me ;-)

As I explained, the CPU becomes crazy during 1 or 2 minutes. You can see the evolution :

During this CPU overload, the process are something like that :

I don't think the problem comes from NAPASVC.EXE, as I already had this problem before installing Norton Antivirus 2003.

By the way, the tasklist (not captured during the problem) :
