xp installation prob..cannot copy files!

need some help desparately!!

i was recently playing a game online when my pc suddenly restarted for no reason. this same thing has also happened when im not playing games.

i decided to troubleshoot step by step..starting with trying to reinstall windows xp! in xp installation, some files cannot be copied resulting in me being unable to install xp. i have an original disk which hasnt got a scratch on it...so it cant be that. ive been told it could be a hardware compatability problem...but i have the same hardware as when i first installed xp. for the record i have reinstalled xp once before because of a virus. there has never been any problems until the unexpected crash the other day!

please help somebody!! could it be mobo, graphics card, memory problems instead of xp???????????

You could always try copying the windows install folder from the disc on your HD then run the install from there, see if it works...

ive just checked my memory through memtest (http://hcidesign.com/memtest/download.html) and it has come up with 700ish errors!!

if anyone has had the same problem as me then the memory could be the first place to check!

if your computer is rebooting, you need to fix this problem first, there are several possibilities, one you could have a virus, symtoms of msblaster come to mind, also your video card or system could be overheating. could have a bad power supply, bad ram, also if you have a large build up of dust inside your computer this can cause static between connections, or overheating. i have not listed a tenth of the possibilities, but this would be my first places to start, check for virus, even if you have a onboard scanner that says you are fine do a online scan. and check the cpu and system temp, open it up see if any dust have stopped up the heatsink for the cpu.

my pc is no longer restarting on it own. im currently without any operating system as i cant get xp to install!! im still getting messages saying 'cannot copy dvdplay.exe' for example.

im gonna try and swap the memory tomorrow to see if thats the problem.... if its not im gonna be suicidal!!! i just cannot understand why all of a sudden i am unable to reinstall xp...ive got exactly the same hardware now as i did when i first installed it successfully!!

by the way my spec is as follows:

asus a7n8x deluxe mobo
512m ddr ram
120g hard drive
audigy 2 sound card
geforce fx 5200 graphics

fozzy, if it is any comfort to you, I had almost the same issue and after lots of hardware swapping I found out that my Slot 1 adapter card had gone bad, so don't be surprised if one of the reason your computer started to reboot would be hardware failure. As known_criminal said, first thing would be a cleaning / dusting then go after replacing the parts.

cheers

Fozzy, is your processor overlocked? I had the same problem before, when I wanted to install XP, it said can not copy some files, but my CD was good, it worked in another machine immaculately. I set the bus speed in CMOS setup from 105 to 100, and the XP installed without any problem. So, please try to set lower the CPU bus speed and so try install XP.
