Hi, I just registered now because I'm also having the problem of no audio. I'm geting the same error message from WMP. But audio will play with VLC theres just no sound coming through. I have the same problems as the first post but none of the solutions in the thread help.
I recently had to buy a new hard drive for my toshiba satellite M50 and after installing a friends copy of XP professional i had to download a sound driver from the toshiba site. After that sound worked fine. But then i found my old copy of XP home with the SP2, which my friends xp professional didn't have so i reinstalled XP. Downloaded the driver. and now no sound.
I went to "Component Services" as suggested and found "Windows Audio" (after looking for "Audio") which but it's already started, the only option is to stop it, which i did, then started it again, and still wmp gives me the error and no sound comes from video or audio that works. Please please please help me.

I am having the same problem, and Windows Audio is "started" in the Services.
It happened suddenly. I had sound on my PC yesterday, but I wake up this morning to discover that my audio device is no longer there. I am using the on-board audio card on my cheap Enpower PC. I kinda need the audio on my PC working for my schoolwork, so anybody who can help me figure this out will be a godsend.

MSI MS-7241 1.1
I managed to get audio working for Windows sounds, but still not working in iTunes and Windows Media Player (or any other media player). Strange, when Windows starts and stops, there is sound..... But when I try to play media, no such luck.

check this first
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device
if Realtek audio is not available go here
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...Audio%20Codecs
Click I Accept – wait for site to reload – click Next
Download the (Executable) file – save to desktop – double click downloaded file and follow installation instructions.
Set a System Restore Point before installing driver just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions
