Internet Explorer responding slowly

I am having very slow response on the internet explorer since yesterday.
whenever i type any net address, the internet address show up on my screen after 2 min , even though i have a high speed connection. earlier i used to go to any site within a second.

yesterday i got a pop up screen saying"server not found" and "connectin". when i clicked the "X" sign on my browser it stated installing something which i could not see , because my cpu went into full processing mode.

is there any way i can find out what got installed in my machine and is causing the problem.

thanks..
