Editing the registry from another partition

Hi all,

I have a question, maybe someone can help. I have a dual boot Win 98/Win XP system. Is it possible for me to edit the registry files of the Win XP partition while I am in the Win 98 Partition? I have this keyboard problem on my Win XP partition and was wondering if I could reset the drivers on the XP Partition from my Windows 98 Partition.

Hope this makes sense

Thanks!

Damion

Your question makes perfect sense but unfortunatly registry only can be edited when operating system is running or an operating system simulator like Winternals ERD is running.

cheers

Hmm well that answers that, I have another question real quick

While I am in my Win 98 Partition, is there any file I can edit or delete on my Xp Partition in order to make my Keyboard drivers for my Win XP Partition to reset to standard 101key keyboard?

Quick background on my situation :P I installed the incorrect drivers for my keyboard on my Win XP partition which caused my mouse and keyboard not to work while in Win XP. However my keyboard and mouse still functions on my Win 98 Partition.

I've tried to fool around with some files but I can not seem to get anything to work. AND the worst part is that a Windows XP Repair doesn't work correctly ( which would solve my problem), because my screen goes blank right after it does the initialization portion ( when it gathers all the standard drivers and stuff) of the setup.

Hopefulyl someone can help

Answer Found??????

This is a 5 year old thread and as it seems there was never a reply to Damion79 question.

Damion79 if you found your answer elsewhere or worked it out yourself it would have been nice to share it. Was an answer found for this?

I preformed a motherboard change. I have used this moving technique without hitch on a number of occasions http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/moving_xp.html

First mistake was eliminating the kvm switch and the cordless setup. I started the new motherboard setup with a PS/2 mouse and keyboard. When I went to go to the cordless setup XP would not release the drivers and a fatal error occur, even with the PS/2 removed. With the ps/2 connected the XP was totally resistant to me changing the drivers. No matter what Microsoft says not any of the procedures for changing drivers worked. Drive me crazy it should have been so easy but could not force it to do.

Second mistake I identified the drivers, mostly in ....system32 folder, and deleted them thinking XP would be forced to look for new drivers and have to settle for the standard drivers. WRONG XP starts and asks for one of the cordless drivers, still. That is where I am stuck with no mouse or keyboard.

I could boot to live Knoppix or Ubuntu or I could probably manage to produce a BartPE CD but I dont know what to do to XP. Of course I have the original XP Pro CD.

What course of action can anyone recommend?
