Unhappy no task buttons on taskbar

Running Win XP Pro 2002 with SP 1 on Dell 4550 2 Ghz 512 ram.
Hardware firewall/router, Symantec antivirus.

I installed a diabetes management program from LifeScan. It messed up taskbar. Uninstall didn't fix it. No error messages.

Quicklaunch bar has a left edge marker but no right edge marker with taskbar unlocked. All the quicklaunch icons are strung out across the taskbar. There are no running tasks buttons visible. Alt-tab will switch between tasks. Language bar is visible with a left boundary marker.

This is true only for the account I was using when I installed the program. Other accounts have no problem with the taskbar.

I also can't get Tweak UI to work, so I can't use it to look at the problem.

Although I could move everything to a new account, it is a royal pain to do so. I'm hoping someone has an answer for how to fix this without reinstalling XP or some equally drastic method.

Any suggestions? Please.

Have you tried doing a system restore, if not try that first. Pick a restore point prior to the date that you downloaded that program.

If restore does not work try this.
Put your XP CD in.

Go to START-->RUN and type in SFC /SCANNOW

That will bring up the system file checker; it scans all your system files, and fixes/replaces any that are missing.

Arrow taskbar

Thanks for the suggestions. Alas, neither solved the problem.

System restore politely told me it couldn't restore from that checkpoint -- probably too old.

SFC paused occasionally to complain that I didn't have the right system disk in place, but proceeded when I clicked retry. It completed, but had no apparent effect.

Any other ideas?

BTW, I saw the same problem reported on windows-help, but without an answer. At least I'm not alone.
