drive letter change?

I have partition magic pro 7 and I duel boot with 98/xp.
I install 98 first from a clean h/d and of course the drive is 'C' When I install xp the xp drive becomes 'D' however I want to keep my cd drive as 'D' but I cant change the xp drive letter because it is a system. If I try with partition magic it will change it but it will not boot to xp. My system is ok now, I just wondered if there is a way to keep my cd drive as 'D' and install xp to another drive letter?

Hi artyboy

One way to keep D: as the CD-ROM
is to use PM7 to create two Primary partitions.
Set the First Primary partition Active and install XP first.
After XP is installed, use PM7 to set the Second Primary partition Active
and install Win98.
This will make which ever OS you are booted into to be C:

Because XP is installed first, the XP boot.ini, ntdetect.com and ntldr files
are not written to the root of Win98.
You will have to use a third party boot loader to choose
the OS you want to boot.
PM7 includes Boot Magic that can be used.

Sorry, but I need a detailed explanation of this. I am not a tecky person, but as I understand it if I install 98 second the whole hard drive becomes formatted, wiping out xp....

Hope I have been clear, and I really do thank you for your reply.

After XP is installed, Using PM set the Second Primary partition Active,
this will make it C:
Operations\Advanced>Set Active

When you reboot, the first Primary partition (XP), becomes Hidden.
Now install 98 to C: just like you normally would.
By the XP partition being Hidden the 98 install won't even see it.
The 98 install will only see the Active Primary partition C:.

When you create the two Primary partitions, make the first one as NTFS for XP
and the Second Primary partition as FAT32 for 98.
When PM creates the partitions the process also formats the drives.
There is no need for additional formatting.
