XP System restore hashed

I have a problem and wonder how to correct a blunder. During some disk cleanup, a series of RP's were manually deleted from my XP box. Yup, a real dumb move, an accident, but my bad.

Now, the system restore feature will not update RP's. I have turned off system restore, rebooted, run chkdsk /f/r/v to clean up inconsistencies, rebooted, turned system restore back on, and still RP's are not created.

The event logs record no errors nor are anu pop ups displayed when I start (or restart) system restore. For all appearances, it looks like it's working. It will let me make a restore point, but none are actually made.

I have reloaded the OS, done a repair, and still no luck.

I have googled this and have had no luck. Any ideas how to get my system restore to actually start making RP's?

XP Pro, 1.7Ghz P4, 1 gig mem.

As it t urnes out, the System Restore was NOT really hased, just locked out. Somehow, when the RP's got manually deleted, the system put locks on all \System Volume Information directories. After using the CACLS system command to restore permissions to the System Volume Information directories, the System Restore starting working just fine.
