black screen when logging off

I am experienceing a strange problem with Windows XP. I started over the last week or so and does not happen every time. Sometimes when any user logs off instead of getting back the the login page you will get just a blank black screen and the login page never appears.

I have searched through the forum and found posts about black screen during reboot but nothing when just logging off. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I've been having exactly the same problem as you.

I never thought I would find another user with the same problem.

Have you managed to sort this out?

I also have this problem.
In my case it just happens to 1 of the 5 users (not an admin user).
I kept trying to watch my daughter when she logged off, thinking that she was doing something wierd. It always worked just fine when I watched.
Now I let her use the XP system if she is the only user & then she must shutdown. Other than that she has to use the WIN-98SE system.
Still looking for an answer.

Thanks

My situation is the same. It always seems to happen to just one of the 4 limited accounts I have set up and never to my admin account.

I have tried removing the programs that were in use during their session, but this never clears the fault.

The funny thing is that I now have two PC's, with the same account names and types, and the same thing is happening on both. Is it something to do with the users name - Matthew in my case?

On the new PC I have removed every single program, reloaded the system as per the factory default, and still the problem persists.

My PC at work has Windows 2000 on it and I only reboot it about twice a year. Why can't my computers at home be the same?

I'm doing a test at the moment to see if my copy of Office 2000 is to blame.

I have left it running on my original PC and replaced it with Office XP on the new one.

Yesterday I had two black screens when my kids logged of of the orginal PC, but so far none on the new one.

If this isn't the answer then I have no idea.

I would call Microsoft, but as I can't reproduce the fault whilst on the phone, they probably won't be interested.
