furthermore
furthermore, when i go accessories/entertainment/volume control i get an error along the lines of 'there are no active mixer devices available. and it tells me to go to add hardware. when i do. as the other person above stated. the drivers are there and are apparently working properly. this sends me through a loop that never ends and is never solved. im dying here. any help would be appreciated.

after further research
i found the problem. this may be the same problem the person that posted before me is having.
somehow, it got disabled in bios. i have no clue how.
but go into bios. if you dont know the command. go here.

then go to advanced, go down to whatever your sound card is. in my case it was onboard. and activate. if its not activated.

What I've discovered is that I just have to do a clean install again of the XP system to get the sound to work. Of course, that means I have to back up everything I've got on there now... wish me luck~!

Well, to answer your question, I got a newer Soundblaster Live! and did a reinstall of the XP system, and that worked. Didn't end up having to do a clean install, so I was happy about that.

Possible Solution!
OK. I figured out an additional step.
For some reason, after I installed either SP2 or one of the other critical fixes, my audio devices stopped working. Uninstalled and reinstalled the hardware in device manager with no luck.
The audio device appeared just fine in the Device Manager, but in the Sound and Audio Devices Control Panel, I kept getting the "No Audio Devices" message. All options in this control panel item were greyed out.
SOLUTION:
Go to the Services, and look at Windows Audio. Seems that MS set the service to DISABLED. Enabled it, and all of my Sound options appeared!!!
Hope this works for you.

I had the same problem.
I had the same issue; no sound; but drivers were there; everything looked fine. This stumped me for about a week. Okay; so this is how I fixed it. Go to "Start"-\"control Panal"-\"Administrative Tools"-\"Component Services". This will pull up a seperate window, on the left click "services (local)" from the tree. Go down to the "windows audio" service. If the service is on "disabled" or "manual"; right click and select "properties" under "startup type" change to "automatic"- click apply. click "start". Reboot!!
Thanks

No sound device installed / no sound
After trying many of the things above, which didn't help or only temporarly I found out what really helps!!!
I used the Repair function of Windows XP
1. Switch off computer
2. Put original Windows-XP CD in
3. Switch computer/laptop on
4. Press any key
5. press space key
6. then don't press any key
7. when you will be asket press R for Repair and then follow the explanation on the screen .
(I learned that from a Microsoft-Hotline-man.)
I did not have files and data which got lost. A few programs had to be reinstalled. But that was worth it. Now erverthing works again!!! I am really happy. Thanks to God. (I did pray that I find a way out and promised to post it if it works. Jesus is Lord!!!)
Under http://www.hinterwaeldlers-home.de/r...tallation.html I found an even more exact explanation how to repair XP - sorry only in German, but you still get some clues what keys to press.
God bless you all!

administrative tools
Hi,
Thank you so much for the Administrative tools tip, it finally gives me an easy way to fix this problem that has been plaguing me for months, and no one at compUSA had any idea how to fix. Unfortunately though, when I do the administrative tools fix, I have some other minor problems that occur. Mainly, I use Windows XP Media Center edition, and my remote control is no longer able to control the volume once I use the fix. Any ideas of how I can solve this issue. I appreciate everyone on here so far, if this last fix is possible, you will all be life savers.

Guys, when it comes to computers, I'm an idiot. New to the site. The computer I'm on lost sound a while back. No Audio Device. Yesterday, I went to dell.com, entered my tag number for the computer, and downloaded (what I thought) would fix the problem (SoundMax). We can now hear audio through Windows Media, for example, but when we go to sites like youtube.com, no sound plays. Sound plays on some sites and not others. Any ideas?? Should I maybe uninstall SoundMax and install something else? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
