No Sound on XP Troubleshooting
Folks,
Here's my $.02 on how I solved my flaky sound on an XP box.
I figured an install of a CD-ROM Burner had mangled the drivers.
So I re-installed the old player. Still, the sound would play a while, then stop.
Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices
CD-ROM -> properties -> driver -> uninstall
shutdown and pull the AC plug!
Unplug the power from the CD-ROM drive.
Boot PC.
Control Panel
Sounds and Audio Devices->Voice->Test Hardware (wizard)
shutdown PC
Plug power to CD-ROM
boot PC
The idea is to take the CD-ROM out of the loop, troubleshoot what's left, then let the plug&play re-install the CD-ROM driver.
Hope this helps someone... Good Luck

My problem seems to be solely related to the Windows Audio service. When my PC starts, that service doesn't start (even though it's set to start automatically). When I start it manually, then I have sound and everything is fine. Still, I think there should be a way (or a fix) for this.

Easy Fix
I had the same issue on a few of the computers I support here at work. I found the solution was simple. Go into the services (right click on MY COMPUTER and go to manage, double click on services and applications, double click on services. On the right hand side, scroll down and look for Windows Audio - the service is probably stopped. Right click on it to start services. This will usually fix that issue.

After installing XP SP2 the "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" stops functioning. This can be confirmed by looking in Device Manager - there should be an entry for this listed under System Devices. If not, then you have the same problem as me and the following fix *should* work...
- Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
- Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
- Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
- Run the Add New Hardware wizard
- Select Show All Devices and Have Disk
- Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf
- Under Standard System Devices, select the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator
Your audio device should now be recognised.
Hope this helps lots of people as it took me a week to find the solution!
Merry Christmas

This fix WORKS. I had no enumerator in the hardware profile. I had previously installed XP on top of itself in a different directory only to have sound work so I knew it wasn't hardware based. Then that installation went to crap thanks to spyware and such.
I still had the boot option for my original install. Once i applied the above fix, it started working IMMEDIATELY. NO reboot, nothing.
Thank you SO MUCH for your contribution. This made my fix about 15 minutes long. (It took me 15 minutes to go through other fixes listed here, but the Windows Audio service was already started, etc)

EVERYONE... I have been a computer "Nerd" for many years and this has baffled me for a few hours....
This solution did the trick...
One of the first things EVERYONE with this symptom should do is,
make sure your plug&play enumerator is in device manager..
Thanks again ... This one had me confused...

Wow. First of all, cool that this has helped a lot of people.
Second, to bad I am not one of them.
My sound card: Motherboard standard, and the motherboard is an MSI, thats all I know.
I have reinstalled WinXP on the computer, and formated aswell.
I did not have sound from the first day, so I don't think is has something to do with SP2.
I have tried Valiantines tips, and the sk. "solution".
I don't have the "Plug And Play Software Device Enumenator" and when ever I try to install it, using the instructions, it successfully installs, but when I check in the list, it's not there. I don't get why it does not work!
So, what do I need to do?

To Lilli985
Hello Lilli985, your problem may be fixed by now, but if not, I believe I have your solution. This week I connected a headphone/mic set and lost my computer speakers. Even after unplugging the headset and rebooting, I still had no sound. By chance I cam upon the solution, it is quite simple.
For Windows Vista:
1, Start
2, Control Panel
3, Hardware & Sound
4, Sound
When you open this window, a message should be displayed saying that you have no audio devices. This is where I was also hung-up.
Solution:
Right click within the window, click "Show Disabled Devices", right-click on your disabled speakers, and click "Enable Device". This should fix your problem!! Hope it helps!

i know the solution
hey guys, see your all having problems with your sound even though device manager says its fine. Solution: click start and go to run and type "services.msc" when you are there locate "Windows Audio", right click and set it to manual by the properties and then right click again and start the service. problem solved. Its bit quicker than reinstalling windows? no need to thank me
