Try this reg hack from this site!

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm. Scroll down the page until you get to 371. It's labeled Restore Sound-Windows Audio Service.
run and merge registry, then reboot your machine. This hack fixes a corrupt windows audio server, worked great for me.

fresh xp install, no audio devices detected

Hi all! I just wanted to say "Thanks" for the info I found on this thread. I had done a fresh install of xp on my computer and suddenly I had no audio devices detected.
I tried everthing, installed new drivers, I spent several days searching and searching for anything to help. Then, I happened on this thread. I tried the advice of going into BIOS and found my audio had been disabled. I don't know why but I am so happy it worked just changing that one little thing. Thanks a million!!!!!!!!!!!!

I see that this Thread has been going on for over a year. That means only one thing; no easy answers. Inasmuch as I just fixed the same problem on my computer, after installing a Windows XP update I thought it might be helpful if I shared what fixed my defect:
Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->Sounds & Audio Devices-->Click on the top tab which is the word "audio". The top option under "Audio" is "Sound Playback" "Default Device". Click on the scroll tab to the right of "Default Device" and pick any other option available except the one that is being used. Then go back to the top left tab which is "Volume" and see if your audio device is now listed and everything is now appearing proper as it should have been initially. It was for me and I hope that it will be for you also. Now it is just a matter of fine tuning everything by clicking on the advanced tabs listed under "volume" and also the advanced tabs listed under "audio". Be sure to place a check mark in "place volume icon on the taskbar".
I hope that this works for you as well as it worked for me.

Jerry

Hi, I have everything grayed out in my sound. It says no audio device, and the tabs sounds, audio and voice are all greyed out. I ahve read through each post here and nothing has worked.

You see this is my old computer, and my parents wanted to use it since I got a new one. I completely reformated my computer, but now it says "no audio device." I really have tried all the things suggested here, and still nothing has worked. I really don't want to have to take it to the geek squad for like 150 dollars when my parents probably won't pay that much for the computer itself. I asked them if they can live without sound, but my mom needs this program for her work that needs sound, and my dad wants to add music to his ipod. He wants to listen to a song before he buys it (as anyone does) and it is a waste of time for him to go up 1 or maybe 2 flights of stairs to my room to use my computer to listen to a song for 30 seconds, then walk all the way back down to buy it. I would be just as annoying for my to brink my whole computer down for one minute, and take it back up.
So please, if you have any more suggestions, please post them so I don't have to waste a lot of money.

I also have another question, completely unrelated, if anyone has the answer. My family computer, a emachines about 5 years old (desktop) and about a year ago, it started getting slower (and we scan for viruses every week). And now it the screen will go to a black screen with the mouse, but you can't move the mouse or do anything. We have to manually shut down the computer each time this happens (which I know is bad) and even when we try to shut down the right way (do it from the start menu) then the computer goes to the black screen and we have to do it manually. My parents refuse to buy a new computer (even though it really isn't uasable anymore). Is there anything I can do or do we just have to get a new computer?

Any answers will help.

Thank you

I had the same problem for almost 2 months and today I accidentally fixed it. If in sound and audio devices volume tab it says no audio device and is grayed out where you can't click place icon on task bar then try this SIMPLE solution.

Go to: control panel
Go to: double click sound and audio devices>>place cursor in volume tab and scroll wheel on mouse and the grayed area changes, no audio device goes away and the name of your sound card appears. If this happens then it is fixed.

Now all you have to do is:
Go to: sound tab and voice tab to see if you need to scroll mouse for grayed area to change and sound card to come on. If you do the click apply and OK.

DON"T click apply and OK in the volume tab until you go to sound tab and voice tab. Click apply and OK in these 2
tabs and then volume.

Good Luck

In Device Manager your Audio Device is "Working Properly", however in Sounds and Audio Devices you are told there is "No Audio Device".

After installing XP SP2 the "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" stops functioning. This can be confirmed by looking in Device Manager - there should be an entry for this listed under System Devices. If not, then you have the same problem as me and the following fix *should* work...

- Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
- Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
- Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
- Run the Add New Hardware wizard
- Select Show All Devices and Have Disk
- Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf
- Under Standard System Devices, select the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator

Your audio device should now be recognised.

Hope this helps lots of people as it took me a week to find the solution!

Merry Christmas

Putting them together..

So i had the same problem, with my dell model. I found out that i didn't have an audio thing downloaded onto my computer. If you have a Dell computer, you can go to this link, http://support.dell.com/support/down...atid=&im pid= Click on audio, and download one of the two they provide. ( i downloaded the second one)
after that, i just plug in my speakers and they work great
oh if that still doesn't work, try start>control panel>administrative tools>component services>services>windows audio and make sure its started. if its on manual or disable, click start device.

Hope i helped ! i had this problem for weeks and i couldn't stand it anymore
