That board has Realtek AC'97 audio, go here to Asus http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us
check to see if the nVidia motherboard firewall is installed, this can sometimes cause the driver not to install, you will see the firewall icon in the taskbar at the right hand side
Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

check this to see if SiS is default audio driver
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

I found my motherboard and sound drivers, so I figured that if I do a reinstall of those, it'll work out somehow. Interestingly enough, everything seems to be fine now, except for the fact that the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator no longer appears in the Hardware list. O_O Which means, again, my unit can't see any Audio Devices DESPITE having everything there.

No Sound On Windows Xp Home After Reinstall
I seem to be having about the same problem that you have been solving for many others here. A week before a hard drive failure, I had run an extended analysis of it, and backed up all my data files to an external hard drive I keep solely for that purpose. After its failure I elected to update my system with a SATA controller, and new SATA II drive. After reinstalling Windows XP Home, SP3, and the rest of my applications, everything was working well, except there was NO SOUND. My Media Player, iTunes, and DirectXv.9 all told me there were no audio devices installed. I starte reading this forum and tried some of the possiblefixes, but no joy!
My Device Manager does not mention of any Multimedia Audio Controller, nor anything else indicated by Windows to be an unknown (or un-driver-ed) device. I have included the Eerest summary below. In addition, my "Add or Remove Programs" applet indicates "Avance AC'97 Audio " (Driver?, Controller?) is installed; my System Information\Software Environment also lists ac97intc.sys (Inte4l 82801 Autio Driver Instalation Service), cmuda.sys (C-Media audio Interface), viaudio.sys (Via AC'97 Controller(WDM), and wdmaudio.sys (Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver, are all installed. Local Services applet in Component Services lists "Windows Audio" as "Started" and "Automatic".
Some of these are levtovers of my previous attempts to resolve the "No Sound" issue. Some of these can no doubt be deleted as they don't seem to produce any beneficial result, nor damage.
I will be very grateful if you can direct me to a solution to this frustrating problem.

No Sound On Windows Xp Home After Reinstall.
Bookworm/Barbara.......
Thanks for the response, I have rosolved my "no Sound" issue. As I indicated, in one of my attempts that preceded reinstalling the chipset drivers, I had installed the Realtek AC'97 (Avance) drivers and they were in fact listed in the installed programs. While Waiting for your response, I decided that the Avance AC'97 software chould not have been listed as installed software and removed it. After restarting, my sound was back and is it ever NICE!!! kdion't think for a minute that I'm not appreciating all you have done for others....AND ME! It was my continued review of the posts of problems and your responses that gave me the thought that there may well be a software conflict. Once again, YOU ARE A HERO!!
WONDERFUL FORUM! Keep up the good work!!

choose one of the download links - it's a zip file - install this way
Installing Drivers
Create a folder for what you are downloading
Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder
Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here
That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)
Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation
If no Setup file
1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.
Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

I'm having the same problem. I've tried multiple methods throughout this entire thread and none of them have seemed to work. It says no "Audio Device detected" but also says "working properly" for the drivers and such. For the Audio Device it says "Unimodem Half-Duplex audio device" located on "SoftV90 Voice Speakerphone Modem". When I go to the properties for the Unimodem and then click on Audio Devices it just shoes "Modern Wave Driver". Also under the 'audio' and 'voice' tabs in Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices it only shows "Modern #1 Line ___" for all the default devices and nothing else. I have no clue how to fix this.

Valiante,
you truly are a blessing. It is now 1:24 am eastern time here in Six-Burgh Steeler nation, I am on my third day of searching for fixes to my "No audio Device Detected" problem. The computer hosts my turtle beach midi 4x4 chord that connects my yamaha 88 key piano to my computer, which did not function properly; Two of my audio programs that I use for recording and music production were not functioning properly. Somehow the MIDI input was not functioning correctly. The software and drivers never gave an error, windows was unable to locate any options for audio in drop down menus with Realtek HD audio Device, No sound icon on taskbar, no plug and play enumerator, I am still missing a sndvol.exe file tho. I tried various other installs/unstalls, reg edits, file edits, codec programs, reg fixes. Your method was clear, concise, and accurate. I decided to register so I could really thank you for sharing your info with us, best relief of my week..No matter what you ever do bad, your alright by me
