No Sound.. Says No Audio Device, but drivers are there and enabled "working properly"

I just got XP, (and new to PCs) and I installed a Soundblaster 16 PCI card so I could use Via Voice, because the sound card on my motherboard wasn't compatible. Everything was working fine and then all of a sudden I had no sound. The device manager says that there is no audio device, but clearly shows the audio drivers there and working properly.

I tried disabling and removing the Soundblaster but still nothing, same with disabling the built in soundcard. I uninstalled the Via Voice, and upgraded the SB driver from Soundblaster's site also... but still no sound

Any suggestions what to do next?

first, i would reboot, enter the bios, disable the onboard audio, game port, and midi. then boot back into windows, go to add remove programs, make sure any program for the device was removed. turn the computer off, put in the card, boot up, then use the install cd. the problem is (more than likely) the default device in audio properties is still the onboard, you can select the creative devices and it will probably work, but it will be better to disable the onboard all together.

sound

Have you tried downloading the most recent drivers for your card and installing them?

try what known_criminal said, if you didnt disable the onboard then they may be fighting each other for resources, etc.

What does "go into BIOS"mean? What is a BIOS? Sorry, I'm new to PCs and don't know the lingo.

Thanks

Well, I figured that "bios" was the device manager. The onboard audio, gameport, and midi were already disabled. So I decided to just give up on the Soundblaster. I went in and removed all the programs, removed all the drivers and enabled the onboard sound card again... then shut down the computer, removed the card from the slot and then rebooted making sure all evidence of the soundblaster was gone from the computer... and it is as far as I can tell.

I rebooted again, but still it is not loading the sound manager and it is telling me I have no audio device. Any advice?

BIOS

The BIOS is not the device manager.

To get into the BIOS you have to do this. When your computer first starts to boot, before Windows starts to load, you have to hold down the DEL key. On some systems it might be some other key. It will tell you which key you need to use on the intial black screen before Windows loads.

Once you are into the BIOS you will have options that you can change.

Thanks .... so I went to where the BIOS settings are, but the sound/audio was under "Integrated Peripherals". There I found and disabled "Onboard Legacy Audio" "MPU410" and "Gameport" and I ENABLED Soundblaster.

It doesn't look like there are any programs associated with the onboard audio in the Add/Remove programs control panel... but of course I'm not sure of what I'm looking for.

However, I still have "no audio device" no sound
And the VIA (onboard audio) driver I removed (from system audio devices) and when I rebooted, the computer found it and installed it again. So I disabled it in the control panel.

What do I do now? Anymore suggestions?

Thanks, by the way, for all the help so far.

try using a different PCi slot, that way windows may detect it as new instead of trying to reconfigure it on the slots its currently on.

Well, of course I have! I've had to unplug and replug it several times because of switching between the motherboard and the Soundblaster -- which I have removed by the way and all its components -- so that isn't the problem... but thanks anyway. The speakers work fine on the other PC I've got here, too.

i was assuming again, is this a pci, or a isa soundblaster 16, you may have a bit of trouble getting xp to detect a isa soundblaster. two years ago my kids computer had a isa sb16, when i upgraded the computer to xp it didnt make the upgrade, didnt show as a compatibility problem, i just bought a pci sb 16 and it worked fine and i have not looked for patches/drivers or fixes since
