What do you mean in 'a bad way'

Do you mean the way you turned the computer off?

What file system is your HDD formatted with?

In the first instance I would boot from your XP Emergency Boot Disk and run Checkdisk to check for file corruption.

The file system NTFS or FAT means that you can use different tools.

Your quickest option is probably go for a system repair.

Because you didn't turn the computer OFF properly is quite possibly the reason it is broken.

Have you tried an OS Repair like I mentioned earlier?
