Power surge on hub port

Has anyone ran into this? It all started when I downloaded SP2 on XP home.
Microsoft says that to fix it you have to have a power adapter, but I do not have a hub and only running 3 of the 4 USB ports on the m/b.

Here is Microsoft's answer:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...0893#appliesto
I don't quite agree but don't know how to fix it.

Appliances installed are HP psc 1350 printer, Wingman extreme joystick, handspring PDA. Little history, a buddy gave me this putr, due to his lack of skills and wanted to use it for a door stop. Reset the bios cleared the cmos reloaded the restore and recovery and it started working. Took out the 30g h/d and put in 7200 spin 80g h/d and added a 300w power supply as the old one had a squeal in the fan. Probably due to all the dust running in it. Have worked on car engines that were cleaner. All is working fine now except for this surge message that pops up every once in a while.

HP 1.4 gig, Pavilion7935
AMD Athlon w/768 mg ram
Azsus M/B A7V-VM
GForce 5500 video card (Add on)

You got all those devices connected to the computer with 300Watt power supply ? You may have a power supply issue not USB problem !!!! Does the error message pop up when external devices are not connected ? Did you try to disable the USB port in the BIOS to see if the error message would still pop up or not ??

Cheers

Yea, I tried unhooking all the devices and it still popped up. Tried that last night. So far today it has not happened with everything plugged back in. I read on another board where it might be an SP2 glitch. Thought about the power supply, but had to have minum 250 watts for the video card. Didn't think that would be a prob after researching the m/b specs, info. I know that HP can do some wierd things from past experiences with helping other people. This one is my first HP. My good one is a Gateway and I have never ran into problems with it like I have this one.

You are not at the end of your problems . WHY did you not expect problems when you installed a new graphics card requiring a minimum of 250 watts power on a computer which only had a 300 watt power supply. You may like pretty graphics but you sure did not leave much power available to the rest of that Compaq. You are pushing the machine and I would expect overheating to eventually cost you the power supply plus other such things as the processor. You sound like a gamer [joystick] so talk to others about the proper hardware {power supply} for what you want to do. I think Microsoft was on the right trail when they said you were underpowerd!
