Video File Playback Problem with XP
I'm having a freeze / crash problem with any type of video file that I try to play
back (.avi, .mpg, .vob). I am dual-booting with Windows ME (XP is on a second hard
drive) and everything still works fine on the ME operating system. XP gets through
the first 10 or 20 seconds of the video (sometimes less) and then the whole system freezes, including
the mouse pointer. All I can do is shut off the power. This happens regardless of the type of playback program I am
using (Windows Media Player, Power DVD, etc) and I have updated all drivers to no
avail. I wonder about my partitioning methods and installation, but I have tried
reinstalling XP which doesn't help. My original hard drive with ME on it is 60 GB
and my new HD is 120 GB (both Maxtor). My system:
Dell Dimension 4300 P4 1.5 GHz
640 MB SDRAM (one 128 and one 512)
Soundblaster Audigy Platinum EX
NVidia GEforce2 MX/MX400
I kept my original OS on the 60 GB hdd as drive C: and partitioned my new hdd into
a 30 GB XP system drive (E) and a 90 GB storage drive (D)using Partition Magic.
I did put the XP system partition AFTER the storage partition on the new harddrive
unfortunately (is this the problem?), and the new harddrive was installed on cable
select primary slave with the original hdd as cable select primary master (I've heard
this can be bad but I would need to buy different cables to change this.) All else
seems to work fine on XP with the exception of games which sometimes crash and quit
themselves and are always a little jittery. Any help or suggestion is greatly appreciated!
P.S. Partition Magic wouldn't help me partition for XP installation on a second hard drive because of "complications" with putting XP on anything other than the first hard drive, (the wizard said) so I was kinda on my own. I just figured it was okay because XP installed and booted just fine. Is it alright to install XP on a slave drive in its second partition?
