Service Pack Files

I reinstalled XP Home, using HP System Recovery. I copied a folder from C: windows, called Service Pack Files. I did this, thinking that I would not have to reinstall all the Microsoft critical updates, service packs etc. This folder is 258 mb and inside is a folder called i386 (not I386). Inside of i386 are 1,127 files and 1 folder. The 1 folder is called lang and the rest are files. Another folder I copied was Windows Update Setup Files.

Did I copy the wrong folders? Because, when I went to the Microsoft Update site, I have 43 critical updates to install.

I've already placed these 2 folders in windows. I guess I'll have to just toss them and do all the updates? I'm also hoping that when I placed these folders into windows, I did now overwrite anything...and maybe tossing them is a mistake.

One other issue. I saved a program installer for Anfy. After I installed it, my system crashed (it never crashed before while using Anfy). I submitted an error report and it led me to an Intel site and recommended a new graphics controller.

Mine is a Intel(R) 82810E Graphics Controller Version: 6.13.1.2872 and the one recommended is Driver Revision: 6.13.01.3196 Production Version 6.7. Making sense??? The new driver download is sitting on my desktop right now. Install it?

After all of this , the same old issue I had before , still exists. Paper jams in the Lexmark X73 printer, program not responding, I restart to enable the printer, system hangs on "Windows is shutting down" and I have to press the power button to turn it off! I hate that.

Your advice would really be appreciated !

Service Packs & Critical Updates ...

You need to Install these to make them work.

Did you actually open the folders and copy files into you Windows directory or just copy the folder?

If you only copied the folders - delete them and run the Install executable files from CD.

Anfy...

Do you really need this application?

If you don't go to Control Panel and use Add Remove Programs to uninstall.

To be quite honest any downloads from the net that need their own installer app are probably not worth the risk.

Graphics Driver ...

You should update your graphics driver, it may not cure your problems but should increase the graphics ability of your controller.

Paper Jams ...

Paper jams in any printer are normally one of 3 things ...

Bad paper - damp or sticky.

Printer settings are wrong - set to envelope or set to thick paper when using thin or set to thin paper when using thick.

Dirty rollers in the printer.

Talking

Thanks for your help LooseChippings !

I have installed the updates. The folder called Windows Update Setup Files was not there when I went back to it. One called WU Temp was in its place. It contained 2 installers. I ran them both and checked Windows Update and now only have 13 updates to install, rather then 43 !!! What a break. And yes, the folders were just copied. I could not "move" them from the disk to windows directory, I had to copy them from the disk to get them to windows.

I really don't need Anfy, but, I like it. It makes nice screen savers. Like I said.. it never gave me a problem before, so, I'll just keep an eye on it. I think I'll uninstall it and reinstall to see if I crash again.

I installed the graphics driver.

As far as the paper jams... I just bought new paper. There are no settings for type of paper - just size. When I was buying my paper the other day, the guy at the store said Lexmark's always have paper jams. I also read somewhere that Lexmark considers the X73 printer a throw away printer. Some parts cannot be repaired or replaced. This printer actually sucked in about 20 sheets of paper last week. Now, that was a jam !

Can you recommed how to clean the printer rollers and which rollers.

Thanks again ! You saved me alot of time regarding those updates. All I had to do was install them.

Ensure the Power Cord is disconnected.

Then it is a matter of removing whichever case panels you can.

Once the rollers are exposed use a tissue with clean alcohol (I use aftershave) to clean the rollers.

Also use a cotton bud or similar to clean in hard to get places.

You will be surprised at how much crap is lingering in your printer.

Aftershave? I bet your printer smells nice!

I'm reluctant to open the printer case, because, it is a scanner too. I loosened a few screws and didn't get very far.

I called a couple repair places today for price quotes on cleaning and $99 per hour for service is just too much. That is exactly what I paid for the thing.

A few months ago, I overfilled an ink cartridge. Made a huge splash inside the printer. I wiped up as much as I could. Now the ink is gummy. I'm quite sure that is it.

I'll just take my favorite french perfume and swab around some more! At least it will smell nice. Actually, I just used a rag and cotton swabs last time. Now I will try some alcohol.

Thanks !
