Windows XP will NOT allow folders at top with descending dates of individual files
I've been posting this issue on a couple forums with no luck. I'm used to my old
98SE setup where I can navigate into subfolders and have deeper subfolders at the
top. Any individual files in a folder would then be arranged in descending order
with the newest at the top underneath the subfolders.
Windows XP will not do this. I got responses like "click on the "name" detail and
the the folders will be at the top. But obviously (at least to some) this would
sort the indiviual files beneath the subfolders by name and not by descending date.
The final word is from the Microsoft Support Technician Chat:

all the files arranged by the date after them?
{Scott_Costello} Yes, but I want Folders at the top with DESCENDING dates of individual
files below it (like I always had with 98SE). I can't get XP to do that. It only
gives folders at top with ASCENDING files.
{Larry D.} Scott I don't think that we can arrange the files in that way. The way
that the sort by date works in Windows XP is that it will arrange all of the Folders
starting with the oldest and then ending with the newest and then listing all of
the the files in the same way oldest to the newest.
{Scott_Costello} I'm sorry to hear that. It doens't make for easy navigation if you
arrange files into subfolders. It just doesn't make sense and it's a total switch
from previous Windows. What idiot would think its better and why wouldn't they at
least make it an option to choose ?
{Larry D.} I am sorry about that Scott. I am not sure why that has been changed.
But the way that it arranges those files by the date is the only way in Windows XP
do to that right now.
