Post service pack issues/drive a problems

alright, heres my problem.i have windows xp and whenever i logon it comes up with an error saying :insert cd with windows service pack" because some files have been replaced with unauthorized material that is making windows unstable. my compaq computer didnt come with any cds for xp.i went to the microsoft update page and checked on my installation history and it says that everytime my computer has tried to automatically update the service pack it has failed; however it wont let me update it or remove it from my computer!also i recent problem ive had ever since the error appeared is my floppy drive.when i boot up it will start accessing the drive for no reason,i havent had any luck fixing it so any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your OS is corrupted. You can use your Compaq Restore disk to do a repair which will re-install everything fresh. You may have to redo all your MS updates because repair usually makes everything as original install.
Also you may want to make sure your virus definitions are current and running weekly, and download spyblaster and spybot search to make sure you haven't been loaded up with spyware programs. Both programs can be found at http://www.webattack.com in the freeware section.
Also have you tried to use the restore option and go back to a time when everything was working fine. If you don't have the restore option turned off you can try this also.

Try this.

Go to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Catroot2 and delete or move or rename the "Catroot2" folder ( Windows will automatically recreate a new Catroot2 folder).

Once you've removed the corrupted Catroot2 folder, return to Windows Update and try the download again. This has worked successfully for many people (including me) and I'm unaware of any problems with deleting Catroot2 (as I said, you'll get a brand new one).
