error mess:not enough memory or disk space

I am trying to help a friend. She is writing a book using Word 2000 . It is in Rich Text Format. Her computer does not have much ram and her file is 525,000 kb. She is running XP Pro. When she tries to open the file we get this message: Not enough memnory or disk space to complete operation. I had her burn the file to a CD. My computer has 512 meg of ram. I get the same message. Is there some way of splitting the file? How can she open this? Thanks

525,000 kb = 525 MB = 1/2 GB this is massive for a Word document in fact it is as big as a lot of games.

I have just pasted 2 of W Shakespeares plays (Romeo & Juliet and The Tempest) into a word doc and it comes out as 684 KB

Firstly you need to investigate why the file is so big, Is she ...

'Tracking all Changes'?

Embedding high resolution photos?

Writing the biggest book in history?

We can all say a big 10-4 to LooseChippings' reply. However, whatever you find out, do the following:

Go to "System" / Advanced Tab / Performance Settings / Advanced Tab / Virtual Memory Change / and set to "System Managed Size / Click "Set" / Apply

This will allow Windows to adjust memory for its needs.

thanks for replies

Happy New year and thanks for the reply. Yes it is a big book. Part of the problem is she is using RTF (rich text format) and has a lot of pictures. She should have saved her work as small files, maybe 20 pages. I found some file splitters but they would not handle this size of file or they would not handle RTF files. I will try the previous hint.
