Numerous pop up ads, can i stop them?

I am using XP pro and it seems that lately I have been getting tons of pop up or under ads that have the name - Microsoft Internet Explorer- on the top of the ad. The types of ads are different, most of them are mortgage ads. This usually happens if I go to different web sites and i know that some of them do not support pop ads. does anyone know how this happens and is there anything i can do to eliminate them. thanks in advance.

That is because you have spyware and scumware on your computer.

Yep i have to agree there that you would be wise to install and run adaware don't be shocked if you see a lot of finds just delete them all it's a safe programme plus it has a restore so you can always put anything back you delete

There are also programs that you can use to stop pop-ups. Just do a search on google.

Thanks guys, thats my project for the night. a long time ago, i had installed ad-aware and had some problem with it. i will try it again.
