Is Windows Updates really needed?

Reason I ask is because someone either at HP or somewhere told me that installing the Windows Security, critical, and other updates is a waste of space. I just bought my computer and there is a long list of updates ready to be installed and I have been putting them off. It seems most are security updates that stop people from taking over your computer and some with WM player. Question is should I install all the updates I receive from the automatic windows update center?

I would be sure to install the critical updates if I were you. The Blaster virus wreaked havoc with those who did not have the updates. Look over the other ones closely (recommended) and chose the ones you need and leave the others.
