Please Help
OK, I had a p4 1.5GHz computer with Windows XP Home preinstalled that came from the store. I just recently bought a GeForce4 Ti4600 to go in it, but when I put it in there, it didnt look like it should. I tried everything before I just said "Maybe the motherboard isnt gonna support such a good video card, it being a POS storebought computer motherboard". So I went out and bought me a P4S533 Asus Intel board to put in. When I hooked everything up, I get the blue screen of death and its really agititating. Please someone help me and tell me how I can resolve this problem. Please remember, Windows XP Home came preinstalled so the manufacturers didnt give me a cd. All I wanted to do was change motherboards. Im thinking that the XP just wont boot because it doesnt have the motherboard drivers installed or something along those lines. Any suggestions are helpful.

You are correct in your assumption. XP will not stand such a hardware change. Even if you remove all drivers when your original board is connected, drivers will be required for the new one. You NEED a cd to continue.

well isnt there some way that I can use the I386 folder that comes with it? When they preinstall it, I think they put the XP files in the I386 folder on your hard drive for what im guessing system restore would use. Isnt there a way i can use that? Or my friend has an XP CD, but its XP Pro, can I use that to boot to to fix the problem?

To use the i386 folder setup routine (which is what you must do), you need to be in a windows environment. You can just try your restore cd.. but i dont think you will be 100% successful
Of course you can use xp pro instead, but you will need to perform an upgrade install. whenever xp needs files thereafter... the pro version of the cd will be required. The restore cd will be useless.
In my opinion, you would be better of with a full cd anyway, rather than restore cds.

But if I had a cd, what would I have to do with it? I dont really want to upgrade his computer to XP Pro from XP Home because we wouldnt have a valid cd key, and I'd hate to think that I would have to go out and buy an XP Home just because I wanted something better out of my computer, lol. Couldnt I boot to the XP Pro cd and click "Repair installation" or whatever it says, and it would load the drivers for the board? Please let me know what I can do to fix this problem

Yes, but like i said, if there are any future problems, the cd would be needed. Plus i think you will find that your key has to be input anyway as even the repair goes through the full setup, key and all.
You could allways use the same key for both.

so how would I get the key? Call the manufacturer? if I called the people who sold me the computer, they would probably say I voided the warranty because I changed hardware or something

You could always call the place that sold you the computer and demand that they supply you with a valid Windows XP Home cdrom. If they sell you a computer with XP on it and don't provide the cdrom, they are supposed to put the cab files or i386 files on your pc. If those are not there, they owe you a valid cdrom. If they complain, your no worse off, report them to Microsoft.

In my experience, most companies will provide you a legit copy rather than going through a hassel with Microsoft.
