Hi
If you are able to back up your personal files to CD or to another hard drive or computer, i would then install XP on a clean hard drive, as long as you have your first boot device set to CD-ROM drive,(CMOS) put the setup disc in ,it does not matter whether it is the full or upgrade version,if it is the upgrade, setup will see that you have the previous O/S and you will ask it to format and then it will be installed in the drive follow instructions, they can be a bit daunting for the beginner, but in the end you will work it out.
I would never install an operating system (including Upgrade versions) on top of a previous version, a computer benifits from a format and reinstallation, it will be a lot faster for a while untill you start filling it up again.
Learn how to do an unattended installation, and you will look forward to formating and reinstalling because it is so fast and easy to do,on my computer i can reformat and intall the O/S in 23 mins.
All you have to remember is to make regular backups of your personal stuff.
E-Mail me if you want futher help.
