XP not returning deleted file space to free pool
I have a Dell desktop running Windows XP pro with 387 megs of ram and 140 gigs of disk space. I've been doing some video capturing so I dedicated a 60 gig HD for that purpose. Capturing makes very large files as you know. I've noticed that when I delete those files they do not get returned to the freesapce pool. I'm checking freespace via the Disk properties in Windows Explorer.
Yes I've emptied the recycle bin. I've defrag'ed the drive, ran disk cleanup, and I've re-booted to see if the space gets returned. Nope.
The only way I can restore the space to the free pool is to reformat the drive. I can usually do that but there are times when I might not want to do a reformat and of course it takes awhile to reformat a 60 gig drive.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? I've tried searching this forum for an answer and I've had no luck. Plus I suspect this might be happening on the other drives also. I don't know if its file size related or something else.
If you have had this problem, did you find an answer? And would you be willing to share it with me?
Thanks for listening to my long winded message but it's not an easy problem to explain.
