Question Chinese Enabling Software

Hi everyone. I am new to Windows XP Professional. I just got my new PC and it came with Windows XP Professional installed. However, I do not have the installation CD. Thus, I am unable to make my windows XP decode or read chinese characters. I have tried NJSTAR/Communicator but it does not work well in some games. Does anyone of you know of any free 3rd party software or shareware that I could use on XP Professional for reading chinese?
Also, is there a site where I can download the section of the XP CD where I can make my windows read chinese? Your comments and help are appreciated! Thank you.

Hi,

Go to www.microsoft.com and enter "chinese" without the quotes into search box, top left, perform the search and choose what you need from the download screen.

Hey Tixe, when you get it working, can you let me know what you did?? I find myself in need of the ability to have Windows recognize Chinese TTF Font files for use in Paint Shop Pro (that app can use TTF files to make vector graphics), and I have no idea how to make this happen. I've been HOPING someone that actually reads/understands/works with Chinese and/or Japanese fonts could give me some pointers on how to do this.

Thanks in advance! Either reply here, or drop me an email at: bombshelter@hotmail.com if you woud.

chinese enabling software reply

Hi ImagoX, well if you have the Windows XP installation CD, then you should not have any problem viewing chinese. Just go to Control Panel and click on "Regional language and settings" and follow the instructions of installing the chinese enabling pack taht came with the CD.
If you do not have the CD, then you're inthe same situation as me! I've tried NJWIN and Communicaor, they both work fine with interenet browsers, but I have difficulty making it display chinese when I'm playing one of those chinese games.
So, at the moment I am looking hard for a place to download that section of the Windows XP CD that has chinese enabling capabilities.

TIxe, yeah I have the installation CD, so that shouldn't be an issue...

I have about a dozen Chinese and Japanese fonts downloaded, but they don;t currently work- I'll try what you said and see if that gets them working. By changing the Regional Settings though, I won't make it so that I can't view my ENGLISH menus and such, right? Also, will these regional changes work correctly with a standard english keyboard?

Thanks!

Let me know what's your progress. I think there's an option where you can choose to switch between languages. If you have two or more languages selected, there's a little toolbar at the bottom left of your window that look something like this "|" that you can click and bring up a small toolbar for your to switch languages.

Do you know where I can download that section of the CD where I can install the chinese language?

Well, I loaded the Asian Character Set from my WinXP disc (sorry- I don't know where exactly they downloaded from on the CD- it went to fast for me to eyeball the location but I can check... I'm pretty sure you can download the characterset packs right from Microsoft though, but I may be wrong)...

So now I have about 5 different Chinese dialects and one Japanese one available in "Languages". I selected Japanese as a test, and I can see that Japanese is installed, and I have the little Language switch tool on ny nav bar, but I still can't actually trype any text into any app as kanji (because I only have an english keyboard?)... Even if I have japanese selected as the language, and the font is set to MS Mincho my typing still looks English. I DO now have a language bar at the top of my screen, and I can see lots of japanese characters in the "Soft Keyboard". Can I use this "soft keyboard" in a paint app like Photoshop or paint Shop pro? Also, do you havce any ideas where I can find Japanese fonts? I thought I had some installed but now I cannot seem to find them (sigh). This is very confusing.

Hi ImagoX, were you ever able to find a place to download the language files from MS? They come from the i386\lang directory on the XP CD but I don't have access to the original CD and other CDs I've tried do not work. Thanks.
