Please help...I am having very similiar problem but worse!!!Plz help

I am having practically the same problem just worse...Winxp pro boots up though slower than usual. It takes me to my desktop & loads my wallpaper but displays none of my icons, no startbar, & no taskbar. When I pressed c+a+del, nothing happened so I did it again to try to restart the computer. Unfortunitely, this seemed to have no effect. My cursor(which I am able to move) shows the hourglass, as if it recognized the request, but did nothing in response. So getting fraustrated at this point with seeing the hourglass & thinking I was getting somewhere only to see it disappear with no action, I did c+a+del continuously & held it for longer. Finally task manager poped up & I looked at the processes that were currently running. I saw that my CPU was maxed at 100%, which was suprising becuz I only had about 7 processes running (except at first when it showed about 20 processes for task manager-only one window though- these processes were gone within a half minute or so), compared to the usual of close to triple that amount. They were all system processes (srvhost.exe(2), issas.exe, etc.) except for explorer.exe which showed to be the process consuming 94-97% of the CPU. So I first decided to try to access any app from task manager with the new task button on the app page. Slowly but surely the box to enter the desired task appeared and I hit browse (I was trying to get to the control panel & didnt know exe name), the window appeared but just continued to show the flashlight & file graphic as if it were searching for the folders under my computer without stoping to show anything found. I then tried to view the recent docs in that same window to see if it would do anything different but this just caused the window to go blank except for the heading followed by "(not responding)". So I tried to close it out except for I didnt get the "end now or cancel" option, so I gave it a few minutes hoping for response and when I didnt get I just did c+a+del again which removed the 2 smaller windows & took me back to task manager (took a good couple minutes for the window to be in full disply & functional). At this point I again tried to run a new task, this time manually entering the exe name, but it only again lead to the new task window blanking out & freezing until I repeated the same as last time to get back to task manager. This time I ended the explorer.exe process(no problem doing that) becuz it obviously wasnt working anyways & it was maxing the CPU(that was replaced by 1 of the srvhost.exe when ended) & thought that maybe it would run it as a new task after I ended it since it seemed to be the problem. This time it acted as if it accepted the new task, however just ended up like the process ended before. Now I said fck it and decided to try safe mode (couldnt get to alt boot opt b4-found i just wasnt hittin f8 soon enuff.)I didnt think it was even gonna boot to safe mode bcuz it took so long, but it did eventually & when it did it loaded my icons this time but they were all highlighted (not by me) & none of them went to anything...actually it wouldnt even acknowledge that you were clicking on a shortcut more like if you just left clicked on a blank area of a desktop & still no taskbar. So I do c+A+del and the task manager came up although it took awhile to fully load and access.Then when I went to click on the processes tab it blank out on some of the window and the heading was followed by "not responding". At this point the only thing I could do to get out of it was to just shut it off becuz everything pretty much froze but my cursor movement which didnt matter becuz nothing was able to be clicked on to be redirected or anything. Please help any suggestions or maybe alittle insight into what the problem could be so I can try on it again with something that can maybe direct me in some way where to start rather than just jumping into a problem I have no clue about possibly fucking with things tha relate to the problem in no way and leaving me going psycho & throwing an expensive piece of machinerary out the fucking window!!!Please help me it would be greatly appreciated...Niki

no icons no taskbar but explorer is running and maxing my cpu

Try launching Explorer.exe from Task Manager, and see if it gives you an error.

If it gives you the "Explorer.exe has encountered a problem" error.
Look in the "Click Here" information for a Mod Name, and if it is there it will liley be a *.SYS or *.DLL file, and if it is there, that file is causing your problems.

And since it is not loading in Safe Mode either, it is likely very damaged.

A System Restore may work.

But, let us know if Explorer.exe errors or starts when you try it.

But what if it is running and its maxing your cpu and when you end it and try to restart it it just does the same thing?

Lightbulb My solution

I had the exact same problem recently. No desktop icons, no start menu but otherwise the computer seems to work fine. Most applications (including command prompt) can be loaded via task manager. I also lost my restore points so that option wasn't available to me.

My solution was as follows;

Checking the event log I noticed that Word had crashed (application hang), the next entry showed a disk error and subsequent auto repair by windows. This is where the problem started.

Windows had found invalid entries for explorer.exe and in the repair process deleted explorer.exe! This is why I had no desktop or start menu because while windows was loading it could not find explorer. Note: you will find reference on other internet blogs about just manually loading explorer.exe - my problem was the file didn't exist anymore.

So i expanded explorer.ex_ and explorer.sc_ from the cabinet files in c:\i386 folder. NB These files must be copied into "C:\windows" folder not system32.

Once I had done this windows started as normal. I have had to re-install another program that was also trashed but at least I avoided a total re-install of Windows and all apps.

I hope my solution helps others who may read this thread with a similar problem. PC

PS A bouquet of stinging nettle to Bill Gates team for allowing a crucial operating system file to be trashed so easily.

Smile i have a soloution

I had the exact problem too lastnite (blank desktop and only the documents folder opened everything else works fine),...i only fixed it now....ok this should work i'm usin windows vista but it should work for xp

You can goto Ctrl+alt+Del, open task manager and run explorer.exe to Normally start VISTA.

it works now but u need to do the following steps for it to remain like this.

Step 1: Start > Run , type in 'regedit' (without the quotes of course) in the search box .

Step 2: Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

Step 3: In Winlogon, on the right side, there should be a value called "Shell".
Double click this value. Make sure only "Explorer.exe" is the value of Shell, if anything else is there, simply delete it and leave 'Explorer.exe'. Restart Windows.

Your pc should be back to normall now...if you have any questions based on this jus let me know.

I'm currently having this problem also except unlike all of the previous posters there is no way to access the task manager. when I attempt to do it, I get the error "task manager was disabled by the administrator" which is really stupid because the user account IS the administrator. the only way to access the task manager is by going into the start menu to Run and running the regedit and deleting a value preventing task manager from running. I dont know why it happens, it's probably some spyware or virus.

the point is what do I do to fix this problem without the task manager? system restore? I would very much rather not lose all my data.

Smile Temporary Solution

I have the same problem. No desktop, no right-click, but everything accessible through task manager.

What I did was I made myself a shortcut of explorer.exe (from C:\ WINDOWS), placed it on my desktop, and gave it a shortcut key (Ctrl+Alt+E for me) so every time the desktop disappears, I just press the shortcut and everything will come back again. I was able to get through the day without the desktop disappearing.

Hope this helps anyone...

Hi.

I had the same problem and fixed it by creating a new admin user account (task manager->
new task->
explorer->
(in the address bar type control panel)->
User Accounts->
Create a new account->
then log out using task manager->
log into your new account->
open explorer->
go to Documents ans Settings and copy the desktop contents from the old user account to the new and it is about all the same

Regards

Unhappy Same problem No Desktop

I think I picked up some bad spyware, or something similar. I don't know if my windows xp has been damaged or what. But here is the situation. I cant use my desktop! After I log in my icons, tool bar, etc show up for about 3 seconds, then it is as if the desktop refreshes and things disappear. They come back a few times then they disappear for good. Usually has happened after that is that I get this message:

" Attention, ! Some dangerous viruses detected in your system. Microsoft XP files corrupted. This may lead to the destruction of the important files in C:\WINDOWS. Download protection software now! Click OK to download the antispyware. (Recommended) "

Personally I think that this is a bot or some kind of spyware itself trying to get be to go to a certain website or something.

Also when this message appears it make a sound like I pressed a wrong button or something.

If I click no it attempts to go to //free-viruscan.com/id/4912933/4/1/

And then it goes to blank as the url.

I have been unable to get explorer to run normally, however if I turn off add-ins explorer will work.

I can get to my task manager via CTRL+ALT+DEL and it seems as if my files are still all fine on the desktop. I can even open them. I can open antivirus, and I open firefox, as well.

But my desktop doesn't work.

I ran Trendmircro anti-virus and there was a bunch of junk that was quarantined. Like 21 items between viruses and spyware. (I thought I was protected!!). Anyway. I was previously unable to delete all these. However, today I just went in and I could. So I did. Restarted and still no changes.

I also ran CA Security System. It picked up a number of things as well, that I seem to be unable to delete from my quarantine.

Additionally I downloaded the free version of Ad-aware by Lavasoft to screen for adware. I begin to run a scan and my computer crashes and goes to a blue screen saying.

" a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer". It says some other stuff about what to do if this is the first time this has happened (which it has not been the first time in the last few days). It further states
"Technical information:

***STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x00720072, )xF0815AC4, 0x00000000)

Beginning of dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete."

Not so good. I then have to manually shut the computer down.

When I try to start in safe mode I just get a black screen saying it is in safe mode, and again none of my icons nor the bottom tool bar show up.

I can get an Active Desktop Recovery screen to come up with my desktop for a few seconds, but when I try to "restore active desktop" I get an Internet Explorer Script Error! It asks me if want to continue to run script on this page.

The error says " Doesn't support this action".

It then gives a long url in association with this error: file:///C://Documents%20and%20settings/Andrew%20Rothman/Application%20Data/Microsoft/Internet%20Explorer/Desktop.htt

The window then closes on its own and "refreshes" the desktop once again going back to the Active Desktop Recovery background with my icons visible. This just keeps happening.

All this being said, how I can rescue my desktop? I will give some of the previous efforts a shot and cross fingers.

Any advice you would have would be very helpful. If you think its best to just bring it in somewhere I can resort to that but my warranty has run out.

Thanks

Try this

I had the same problem. It's just some stupid spyware garbage. This is a very simple fix. Just download (HiJackThis) http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-...-10227353.html

It only took me 10 sec. to do the scan. It will ask you if you want to delete everything, I clicked yes. Just make sure that there are no other programs (including the internet) running. This just make it easier to delete the files in case there running. MAKE SURE YOU RESTART YOU COMPUTER, when it comes back on you will have you lovely computer computing for you again!!!

I understand that nothing is a guarantee, but all I see is people coming up with these crazy answers to solve this problem and their all over thinking it. It's spyware, just spyware. So try my way out its very fast and easy. Feel free to respond with any question I'll be glad to help. Good Luck!!!

I have this same problem. Normally, as a temporary solution, you run explorer.exe using the 'New Task' command in the Task Manager. However, whenever I try doing this, the 'My Documents' folder keeps opening up.

I've tried countless numbers of ways to restore my computer but it still doesn't work.

Anyone can help?
