My Xp is slow to start up and shut down

Okay, I have a brand new computer and lately the xp has been really slow to start. It has stayed on the welcome screen for 5-10 mintues before loading all of my icons. My mom suggests that the problem may be the temp internet files, but I empty them each time I use my computer. Someone else suggests that it could be my abundance of icons on my desktop. Any suggestions? please help me!!

1. How much RAM do you have?

2. Have you gone to Windows Update and downloaded SP1a and all the other Updates that are necessary with a brand new computer?
Open IE > Tools > Windows Update

3. Did the problem just start recently? (try using System Restore)

Yeah, it just happened the other day. I will have to try to use the system restore when I get home. Thanks, I will let you know if it works.
