Angry XP Stops responding on network

I have a problem with win xp. I have managed to isolate that the problem is due to my lan. When i disconnect my lan cable from my other computer it runs fine, but as soon as i plug it in it freezes and the only thing i can do is push the reset button. I did start off with the line of thinking that it might be my processor etc, but this proved it otherwise. Yet to find a fix for this! If anyone knows a fix let me know!

Do you have multiple NIC on your system ? I'm thinking could it be interfearing with DHCP server ? what services are enabled on it ?

Could you by any chance disable the current NIC and put another NIC in it to see what would be the results !!!

cheers

some tests:

do you trust your cable?
Are you sure it is a crossover cable?
the nic's led is green or yellow when the pc freezes?if it stays yellow , you have a problem.
unplug the cable and ping 10.0.0.1 and see if you get a reply. If not, you've got a problem with the network card.

I hope it will help.

Thanks for your help, but i managed to sort it in the end by re-installing both computers. It was something to do with my virus check software. i think it was making changes to the registry a screwing everything up!
