slow display of "my computer" content

windows xp seems to have problems with finding the content of 'my computer' (after 25s of searching the content is displayed), it started just a few days ago. There are also problems if I right click on a folder or file, and i want to go to the "send to"-part. It doesn't show the content of the send-to-menu, it just blocks.
Probably these two problems are related, but i don't know what to do...

this is my pc configuration
AMD Athlon XP 1700+
Soltek SL-75KAV/-X
with VIA KT133A chipset series
512 DDR - ram
Windows XP Pro SP1
running Norton Internet Security 2002 (includes NAV 2002)

hi, i was having similar problems with my system (i run an amd athlon as well, and had norton 2003), and i think that norton is to blame. try something. pc cillin is a better virus software, and on their website, you can do an entire virus scan for free. if your comp is running slow, it will take a little while for it to search, but make sure you check the box to scan your whole computer. if youre running a 2002 antivirus, it is probably out of date. if you find that you have a virus, you can go to cnet.com and get pccillin free for 30 days. i dont work for them, but i have found that since ive been using their program, most of the problems disappeared that norton was creating (except for removing norton, which is a p.i.a., but more on that later if you decide thats the problem).

scan your system first and see if you have a newer virus that norton couldnt pick up:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
just click on the free scan, and then check the box to search your whole computer. good luck.

Stiffjello is right, Norton is to blame. I have noticed the same thing on my frinds athlon (2100+) after we installed norton it had a hard time reading My Computer, Archives, and large folders, it seems norton likes to use 110% (ok, an exaggeration) of system resourses to scan everything at once when you open a folder, causing windows to have nothing left to view its own contents with. Go with PC-Cillin 2003, or even try their new program. I use it all the time repairing PC's and always I find viruses on systems running Norton that say they are clean!

I am having the same problem but I haven't got Norton installed yet. I did a re-install last night because of this problem and it is still doing it, any suggestions?

What version of norton do you have? I am now using Norton Internet Security 2005 with antivirus, but i think they have made some huge improvements. I agree with you saying it scans the open folders (and goddamn it kept deleting a certain peice of software...), but it has greatly improved. NIS 2001 is a very sturdy package (less crashes, even on my old P3 500Mhz) but 2002, 2003, and 2004 (2004 especially) had prolems with my pc, which is as follows:

AMD Athlon XP 2600+
Asus A78X2.0
with NVIDIA NFORCE2 chipset
768 DDR - ram
80Gb Seagate Barracuda 7200Rpm
80Gb Maxtor Diamond Max 7200Rpm
Windows XP Pro SP2
256 Nvidia GeForce FX5600XT
but Norton Internet Security has no more problems than attempting to block EVERY SINGLE VPN I USE! Which means i may disable he firewall at some times.
Also, a problem i once had was that explorer took ages to find all of my disks and partitions, which left me feeling more than a little angry. When i finally reinstalled windows, it still happened (i had a C, D, E, F partitions from my 2 HDD's, and G, H for my 2 opticals) so the easy solution was to change the view type.
*Whenever Windows Explorer opened, it had to find details of each drive - which took ages. If i changed the view from 'Detailed' to 'List' then it would find the drives instantly - which i was looking for.*

I hope this excessive waffling clears up something!

Fixed It

This took me hours, but I figured it out. The problem was an apparently unrelated rougue process, windows image acquisition (WIA), that shows up as one of the svchosts. The event viewer reported errors with some DCOM process related to this, so I disabled it in administrative tools-->Services, and three amazing unrelated things happened: 1. The computer went from a 5 minute boot to a 45 second boot, 2. My Computer opened INSTANTLY and displayed drives, 3. Internet Explorer could finally find www.cnn.com or the like without having to type in http:// in front. ????!!?!?!? Whatever. It works.

I decided to register to say thanks to you Rebecca for that time you spent digging around, I was getting nowhere slow on this one until I googled you

Yes it was after installing an HP All-In-One printer - scanner...

You nailed it - thanks again!

Peter

My first guess is that you have a network share or network place that it is attempting to (re)connect with. You can check by doing a right click on My Computer, select Disconnect Network drive, and make sure that this list is empty. If you are using a network printer, same problem may apply. For My Network Places, remove the items you don't use or remove all (except Entire Network) if you're not sure what these are.

Unhappy folder My Computer opens extremely slowly

Rebecca, could you please be a little more specific on what exactly you disabled in the Services? I have the same problem as you describe.

Regards, Michiel

Thank you rebecca

I have been using this online source for XP related problems, but have never seen such dramatic change in my PC preformance than after the changes Rebecca has recommended.
Admin - Service - WIA and Admin - Service - DCOM Both disabled and booting, my computer and all is much faster!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks.

michielper - If you haven't been able to find it yet, go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services.

Scroll down to "Windows Image Acquisition" and look in the Status column. If it says "Started," double click on "Windows Image Acquisition." In the window that opens, click the Stop button to stop the service without having to reboot. In the Startup type drop-down list, select either Manual if you want the service to run when you call on it or Disabled if you want it never to run. Click OK and close the Services window.

Norton Is The Worst Security suite ever it drags down your system resources it blocks simple things like file sharing and suspects everything as attacking your computer

Install latest AVG Professional Includeds Realtime Protection,Email Etc
Install SP2
install SpySweeper

Dont forget to turn SYSTEM Restore OFF When Scanning

Also edit your Menu SHow Dely To the value of 15
Remove all Shadow Efects etc This Can Improve System Performance
