installed different operating system

My husband installed a new operating system on our computer this weekend without creating any back ups. He thought that all the information that was saved on the previous system would be able to be accessed. Outlook was erased completely, address book, all emails, even when saved in other folders, all passwords, everything is gone. He thought he could fix it by putting the old operating system back and going to one of the restore points but they were all gone too. Is there any way to retrieve the lost information? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

if he installed the new os then reinstalled the old one(would help to know which one) the info on the drive is probably gone. did he format or convert the drive at any time?
