Windows validation tool
As many of you all probably know, Microsoft has decided to make us validate our windows software before we will be allowed to download critical updates from now on. This seems to have opened up a whole new mess as far as I can see.
A buddy of mine that I am trying to help bought a Sony Vaio last week, and as he is a noob with computers that only wants to view ladies in comprimising positions over the internet... I told him to download and install BlackIce to make it a bit harder for the hackers to git him.
Anyhow.. here is his problem. Windows update site will not recognize his copy of windows as a valid copy. His version is Win XP Home OEM software that came with the purchase of his new computer. He has not downloaded any driver updates for the hardware on his computer, has not updated from the Vaio site, and cannot access Windows update site. His computer is in its original configuration, with no hardware added to it. The software that I had him install was WinZip, WinAce, BlackIce, Clone CD, and a variety of games... none of which has ever bothered any other computer that I have ever owned.
When I took his puter to the Windows update site, it will scan for available updates, but then goes to the Windows Validation tool. The Validation tool always fails to validate windows, saying it needs more information from the computer, and to contact the computer manufacturer or buy original Windows software as a fix for the problem.
We disabled BlackIce completely, disabled Norton, and disabled the Windows firewall... but still cannot access the windows critical updates. As a last bit of information, he is running Comcast cable for his internet... and this comes with some kind of small program that helps keep him on the internet.
