Windows XP home edition will not boot up
Please HELP! Think the problem started when running Lego Racers 2 on Windows XP Home Edition. Now when I turn the PC on it tries to boot Windows, a blue screen flashes up for about 1 second so I cannot read what it says. Then I get the dos screen which starts "We apologize for the inconvenience but Windows did not start properly............then it lets you try to select, start up in 5 differnet modes - Save Mode etc.
When I select anyone of these options and press enter it returns back to this screen. I have tried F8 and get the option of selecting but it still returns to the Dos screen. When I select any of the safe modes it produces a long list of DOS script with all of the lines starting with the following:
multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (0)
I am new to Windows XP, but have the system about a year. Any advice PLEASE!!!

I had the same problem a few months ago after doing a system restore. I tried everything I could think of to fix it, but just ended up reinstalling Windows with the Repair option.

Yeh hello
I recently bought a new pc with xp on it, after only about a week
i got the same problem as you guys, I couldn't figure it out so decided to format as i wanted two partitions anyway and i thought it was my fault with some software glich.
another week goes by with no prob then today i turn it on and wham it's back. So rang up the company they helped me through the safe mode a lot of writing comes up and i had to wait a while for the safe mode screen to come up and then restored back one day and all is fine again.
When asked what the cause is they say it sounds like a memory fault and have offered to exchange the memory.
but I'll give it another week and see how it goes.
Hope this helps.
Steve

Re my problem
I have tried to install Windows XP however it will not read the CD. How will I bypass this, or will it have to be a call to the IT helpdesk?

I have a Windows XP CD which didn't come with the PC because they can't find it although the security code for the original CD is here. No recovery CD either - can I download something?

If you know that is a goood working CD,, then I work suggest to borrow a CD rom from someone for a bit and copy all the stuff in the CD on to the hard drive then, you can install the Windows from the dirctoey where you have copied the file to...
you can download a boot disk from this site, then extract it to a Floppy drive, and the boot your system with a floppy so you can have access to the hard drive in case oyu drive is not formated or not bootable.

Hello Shinney
Bugger mine screwed up again today.
Got out of it with the restore again have you tried using the restore.
I think it is not a memory problem but software am guessing it could be kasaa, do you have it on your pc.
also when i reinstalled windows i placed the cd in the drive then rebooted hit del to access the bios then had to change the boot sequence to boot of the cd first and all was smooth from there.

this is a for what it's worth post.
i worked on a emachine 2 days ago, system spec, 1 gig celeron, 384 sdram, 30 seagate hd, samsung cdrw,....basic system with xp home. they have had the machine for two years used the system restore cd several times to recover. they bring it to me because of the same problem as the orriginal post(carbon copy of the problem) i tried the restore disk, a norton ghost restore set provided by emachines, wouldnt boot, would freeze the system even in the bios, tested every piece of hardware which were all fine, secure erased the hard drive tried again, same result. secure erased again and installed a copy of xp pro, everything was fine, updated it, works perfect. thinking this was a odd event, i drop in the restore disk and try again, problem came back. ended up, put pro back on, installed the programs that they wanted from the software bundle from different source disk and the machine is fine. after much searching and finding no info on the matter i can only assume that being the owner updated the bios, and the restore cd has drivers and settings pre packaged, there has to be a conflict. a clean install accounts for these changes and a ghost or drive image does not.

I have the same problem. It has has started when I tried installing a scanner and tried installing a freeware winzip. I don't know which one is the culprit. For the benefit of the doubt, I tried disconnecting all the USB cables including the scanner since I also noticed that some of the IRQ's have the same numbers. That didn't work. I also go the DOS windows "multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (0). " that keeps repeating by itself to the whole screen.
I have importnat files and that I need to retrieve. None of the bootable options would work after pressing the F11 and when it comes up to the logging windows that says "Windows XP" it didn't boot up.
Is there anyway I can get my files back withour reinstalling the windows?
Does the recovery disk help?

Most recovery disk will format and reinstall Windows erasing all of your files. Some disk are XP with a Computer maker's brand name on it, like Dell's disk. They can be used to repair the operating system (IF) you are very lucky.
First thing you need to try would be going into the bios and load setup defaults, or system defaults. Your motherboard may have several ways of listing it, but the basic system settings are what you need at this point.
The reason for this, you mentioned irq settings and being in the bios and this makes me assume you may have changed something. Windows XP handles IRQ settings differently than previous versions. If you try to change the IRQ settings it will cause XP serious problems.
Using the F8 key while booting, make sure you try the last known good config, and all safe mode options, if there is no joy, and you have a format and recovery disk or onboard recovery system that just offers to format you will need to slave the hard drive to another machine and recover your files that way. HP/Compaq offer a non-destructive recovery option that just resets everything back the way it was leaving you files intact, but this is not foolproof, somefiles may be lost. The advanced options for the HP/Compaq will format the drive.
It would be nice to know the type of computer you have, and the type of restore it came with to much more help.

I really need help.
I was on my computer. I had just turned it on, and went to tidy my room. I got back and it had switched off. So, I turned it on, and it cane up with the message, kinda like : Windows has not been able to load up correctly" And It had 5 options to load up by. Safe mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with command Promt, Last good known configuration of Computer, And Start windows normally. I tried all of thjem, but not one of them worked. What happened, was it got to the biot, where the windows XP sign can up, and the load bar thingie was there, then the load bar froze for a moment, then it turned off, and back on. nothing I did made any fdifference. Please, I need some help. Not only have I got very valubal files on there, but my Mother has some important stuff on there too. I know alot about computers for my age, but I really need to know how to sort this out whilst keeping my files. Thanks in advance. But peases, seriously i need big help. There was on there, a little blue message, well, a blue background with a message, but it went so fast that I could not read it. I tried to take a picture, but with no lick, If someone can help it would be greatly appriciated.
