XP Weird font all over

Hi,

When I restarted my laptop(XP Home, McAfee anti virus+fire wall) I got a blue screen, and I have selected safe mode. From there on wards all my fonts are changed to symbols(chekmarks, box etc...). I can login and my desktop also has this weird font.
I did virus scan and found nothing interesting. Only thing I have installed before the reboot was Ethereal(actually two days before).


Any help is appreciated.

Yesterday evening my wifes puter did the same thing. Hers locked up & she cold booted it. When it came back on the font looked like Arabic or Egyptian. All kind of strange caraters & symbols.
We did the same as you, a virus scan. Some of the font was readably & some was the weird caraters. As she moused over the icons the font was english.
We did a system check with System mechanic. We ran a system scan & ran a defrag.
This morning it is back to normal.
I don't think this is any help to you just hoping someone out there has an idea of what in the world happened to your & her system.

I'm not sure why your computers are doing that... I have seen it happen though, seems to just be a random system error with WindowsXP Home and sometimes its display drivers. Usually a good system tune up will fix it, usually we just Virus Scan, Defrag, Scandisk, and system mechanic if we have it.

Hi,

Actually I was able to fix the problem, it screwed up my WINDOWS/Fonts directory. Ofcourse simple installation of fonts didn't help, did a copy manually and ran TweakUI to fix the fonts dir. Now it is fine, but I have no idea how those fonts are messed up.
