Unhappy XP security issue

G'day All.

I was messing around with XP's security options (i.e. drive-properties-security/sharing after disabling simple file sharing) and out of ignorance I denied full control for the profile [jethro/users].

So now I cannot access that drive at all, no matter what I do. I tried relogging on as "administrator" and that didn't help. I was able to access the security tab but cannot change/see the permission profiles at all.

DOes anyone know how I can "unlock" the drive again? PLease don't tell me I have to format the thing. WHat about using Partition Magic and changing it from NTFS to FAT32? would that corrupt the files on that drive though?

ANyhelp would be appreciated!!

I have seen something similar happen on our network when the ownership informaiton of a share gets corrupted. Go into the security profile of the problem drive, and click on the "Advanced" tab. Here, you should be able to see who is the owner of the drive. Chances are, there is none. Logged in as administrator, you should be able to take ownership of the drive. Once you have done so, you may get all your permissions put back in order.

Hope it works.

OK, I was able to restore the ownership and permission. I gave full control to administrators as well as users. HOwever, while i can view the root folder (G:\), I cannot view/execute any of my subfolders or files on that drive! keeps saying access denied.

What to do??

Forgot to mention, go to Security->Advanced->Owner, and check the box that says "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects", then go to the "Permissions" tab (still in the advanced window", make sure the permissions are a-ok and check the same box and hit OK. It will go through and set permissions on all child objects that way.

Hmm I just tried that. No luck. Do I have to do that to every profile? I only did it for the admins and other user accounts.

Take a look at the security tab on one of the child objects, it seems like for some reason the changes are not propagating downward when you tell them to. If they have the option to "Inherit permissions from parent", make sure that is checked, as well.

You don't have to change permissions across profiles, you only have to do it once.
