Post Avoid using a router

Hello there

I've got a tricky question and maybe this is the wrong place to post it, if so please redirect me

I've got 3 computers running WinXP Pro. I would like to use one of them as a router since my ISP only gave me 1 IP-adress offcourse I could just buy a router or call my ISP and get more IP-Adresses but I would very much like to avoid doint that since those things cost money

I've got plenty of netcards and so on.. but how do I make one of the machines function as a router? I don't know much about this so a step by step guide would be nice, or if anyone could just tell me which program(s) I would need I think I will be able to help my self through the rest.

Thank you very much for any help.

Best regards

You can designate one computer as the router so as to let the rest two computers get online through this one within windows XP Pro.
Get into Network on desktop and there will be an Option on the left of the dialogue for you to set up the Home and Tiny Office Network with which you just follow the directions.
Of course, you need to have a Hub and three Netcards to construct an Intranet.

Good luck

You can set it up that way, but I highly recommend spending the $50 on a router (netgear or linksys are my preferences). Not only do you get the added convenience of being able to get online from any machine without having the router computer turned on, but it is also mre secure. When setting up ICS on one of your computers, that computer is "right on the internet" and therefore very vulnerable to all sorts of attacks. By putting your whole network behind a router you are preventing that.

Thank you :)

I will only be running my internet this way for a short while (a week) beacause my gf and I wan't to play counterstrike in our winter break so spending 50$ would be stupid...

but anyway everything is working fine now... thank you very much for your time and your knowledge.

Best regards
