Connecting freezes computer

Ever since I did a clean install of XP on my Compaq PC, my computer occasionally freezes up when I try to connect to the internet. But as of yesterday, it freezes up every single time now. It says "opening port" and then nothing else happens from there. I have Qwest dial-up and don't use any of their software to connect, any ideas?

make sure that all your PCI devices and whatsowever hardware devices are tightly inserted or connected. Also, check out from windows updates to see if there is any available network driver for your device. You may also download and install the Compaq Insight Management Agent from hp.com and your might give pop up some prompt for any detected problems on your pc.

My modem is a PCTEL Platinum V.90 Modem that is manufactured by Compaq and I found this:

"PC-TEL Platinum Series V.90/V.92 Modem Driver for Windows XP" at http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search...2&s w_lang=en

Now I just need to get the 4+ meg. file on my computer...

by "clean install" do you mean you used a xp cd, or a compaq recovery cd? if you used a copy of xp to install ,all of the device drivers, chipset drivers, aspi,.....ect may not be installed, or may need updated to account for hardware conflicts. if you did the compaq recovery cd did it completely restore all the compaq software bundle or just xp, i have seen thier disk just install xp then stop, which is a clean copy of xp, but did not add the device drivers, and programs that some hardware needs. if this happened, just run the restore again, it should go through, make sure the disk are clean.

I formatted my hard drive and then installed a copy of XP. I didn't use my Compaq recovery disc.

I uninstalled the driver for my modem and restarted my computer. I had to take a minute to set up my connection again but now it's working again. I don't know why I didn't try that in the first place. Im still not sure if it's going to freeze up on me occasionally though, if it does, I'll try to update the driver.
