Blue Bars in startup after installing XP updates

I just installed some XP Home windows updates and now my PC display is not working properly. At the startup screen, all I see are blue, vertical, pinstripe bars on a black background. If I login, then the display changes to a very distorted mish-mash of colours - I cannot make out a thing. However I can hear the startup sounds when I login. Any idea on how to return my display settings back to normal?

Sounds like your display settings have been changed to something odd. I would boot into safe mode then remove your display adapter. You will have to re-install the video card drivers, but that will get you going.

Boot into safe mode:

After you turn on the computer, before the Windows XP logo shows up, keep hitting the F8 key. You wil be presented with a boot menu, scroll down to safe mode and hit enter.

Once in safe mode:

Right click on my computer and go to properties. Go to the hardware tab and hit Device Manager. Expand Diaplay Adapters, then right click on your display adapter and click uninstall. After that you should be able to reboot your computer. The screen will look really big and the colors will be funny, but you should be able to re-install the vid card drivers and get going.
